Abner was sharp as a tack, his gaze flitting over Queena before casually retracting.

“Excuse me, do you have a cell phone? I need to contact my people.”

Queena didn’t own a cell phone; she had been completely cut off from the outside world since entering the research facility.

Beside her, Tobias slapped his forehead.

“Dad’s got one, but he’s gone fishing. Won’t be back until tomorrow morning.”

Abner nodded in thanks, “Alright, appreciate it.”

Tobias, looking a bit sheepish, scratched his head, “No worries. You hungry? We’ve got some fish chowder at home. I can bring you some.”

After another word of thanks, Abner, who wasn’t the best at social niceties, closed his eyes.

Queena, having tended to the wounds, was about to leave.

Tobias grabbed her hand, “Queena, why don’t you take a bowl of the chowder back for the man at your place?”

Without thinking, Queena glanced at Abner, then whispered lowly, “Tobias, haven’t I told you not to mention him? Don’t bring him up in front of anyone. Pretend you’ve forgotten all about it.”

Realizing his mistake, Tobias hung his head.

“Sorry.”

Queena patted his head, managing a smile before leaving.

Abner was adept at observing his surroundings. The first step upon waking up in an unfamiliar place was to assess any danger.
