"Why don't you think it over carefully?" Wiona reasoned with Tatum, keeping her tone as level and calm as possible.
Before Tatum could even react, Madison buried her face in Wiona's shoulder and burst into loud, heartbroken sobs. The past few days had felt like a never-ending nightmare, leaving her entirely disoriented. Every word Wiona spoke struck a deep chord in her heart. She was truly the best friend anyone could ask for.
Plagued by guilt and fear, Madison had been completely unable to articulate a proper defense in front of Tatum. Now, Wiona had voiced everything she desperately wanted to say. Madison had genuinely feared she was losing her mind, but thankfully, she still had Wiona by her side.
Hearing her ragged sobs, Tatum felt a painful twist in his chest. A dazed, sorrowful expression crossed his face. Had he really pushed her too far? The sound of her crying churned a storm of melancholy within him.
After a long silence, he finally answered in a hoarse whisper. "Alright. I understand. If you do not want to go public, we will keep it a secret. Maddy, let us set a one-year timeframe. After a year, you can choose to announce this marriage, or you can... choose to leave. Now, can we go eat breakfast?"
Madison wiped her tears and looked up at Wiona.
"You haven't eaten yet?" Wiona asked gently. "Go on, then. I will wait for you right here."
With her head hung low, Madison reluctantly turned and followed Tatum. Once they were a bit further away, Tatum reached out to hold her hand. Wiona watched as Madison gave a slight struggle before ultimately letting him hold it. Smiling, Wiona shook her head. It seemed Madison was not completely indifferent to him after all. Who knew, maybe a year from now, there would be good news of a happy ending.
