"But I can't just let go of everything." Cale's gaze turned serious again. "I can't ignore my responsibilities."
Naomi lowered her head. She knew that was true.
"And I can't ignore you."
Those words made Naomi slowly lift her head. Their eyes met once more.
"Mr. Gavin saved me more than once." Cale's voice was low. "There are things I will never be able to repay."
Naomi felt something tighten in her chest.
"That's why I want to make sure you're okay before I truly take my hands off your life, Nao."
Silence settled over them again, but this time it didn't feel awkward. It was simply filled with honesty that had never been spoken before and that Naomi had never known.
"Is that why you wanted me to marry Chris?" Naomi finally asked.
Cale didn't avoid the question. "Yes."
The answer came immediately. Without hesitation, and without any roundabout explanations meant to reinforce his decision. "Because I think he's the safest choice."
Naomi let out a quiet sigh. "Safe?"
"Chris may look like an idiot."
Naomi almost laughed at that. Almost. "Sometimes he really does look like an idiot."
This time, even Cale smiled. "But he's a good man."
His gaze drifted back into the distance. "He would never hurt you. And if someday someone tries to lay a hand on you, Chris will be the first person to stand in front of you."
Naomi didn't argue.
"When I finally let go of this responsibility," Cale's voice was much quieter than before, "I want to do it with peace of mind."
He turned to Naomi. "I want you to be beside the right person."
The sun had now fully risen above the mountains. Warming the air that had felt cold before. And for the first time since all this chaos had begun, Naomi truly understood the reason behind every decision Cale had made.
