Felicia nodded in agreement. "Let's go."
Anne beamed with delight. "Yay!"
After saying goodbye to Heather and Yara, Felicia took Anne's small hand and guided her into the car. They made the smooth drive toward the towering BlueMarble Investments building.
By now, absolutely everyone in the company knew that Evelynn was Mr. Hawthorne's wife. The receptionists greeted the mother-daughter duo with overwhelming respect. Thanks to facial recognition, Anne simply walked up to the private elevator, and the doors glided open for them.
"Daddy!"
Max was deep in a stack of paperwork. He hadn't been expecting them, but the moment his cold, sharp gaze landed on his daughter, his features softened instantly. His eyes shifted to Felicia walking in behind her, and he quietly set his fountain pen aside.
Anne bypassed the massive desk and ran straight to him. Max scooped her up, settling her comfortably on his lap. Raising a thumb, he gently wiped a smudge of frosting from the corner of her mouth, his voice dripping with affection. "Look at you, you little mess."
Anne flashed her bright white teeth. "Mommy bought cake for you too, Daddy!"
Max glanced over as Felicia held out the small bakery bag. He took it from her hand. "What flavor?"
"Blueberry," Felicia answered.
"Did you have some?" he asked.
"Anne barely ate any of hers."
Max set Anne back down on her feet, pulled the small cake from the bag, and unwrapped the wooden spoon. He scooped up a bite. Seeing Anne staring up at him with eager eyes, he chuckled softly. "Want some?"
She shook her head. "Daddy can have it."
Max hadn't actually planned on giving her any more sweets, so he popped the bite into his own mouth.
"Is it yummy, Daddy?" she asked, tilting her head.
