"Thalassa, come on, talk to me." Evelyn chided, nudging Thalassa's arm. "You've been in your own world forever now."
Jolted back to reality, Thalassa tried to suppress the pain that had nestled in her heart. It was spreading through her, coursing along her veins and lodging deep in her bones. Her fingertips felt like she'd held onto ice for too long - swollen and throbbing with a burning sensation.
She gently placed the tea kettle back on the table. "What else can I say?"
"What are you planning to do, really?" Evelyn sighed. "Just keep hanging on with Lysander? Become just another one of his conquests? Youth is not something a woman can afford to waste."
Thalassa's gaze fell, hiding the bitterness and loss that filled her eyes.
"We should just take the kids and run," Evelyn suggested. "Better than losing everything in a bad bargain."
"Mom, have some water. I'll go check if the kids are done with their baths." Thalassa said and stepped out of the room with a weight on her heart heavier than Evelyn could understand.
She knew she couldn't keep going like this. She wanted to leave too, but she was waiting for the right moment.
"Mommy, I’m done washing up!"
"Me too!"
The small figures of Atticus and Dorian were wrapped in fluffy towels. They emerged from the bathroom with their hair damp and faces moisturized. They looked even more cherubic than ever.
Seeing the innocent joy on their faces lifted some of the heaviness from Thalassa's heart. She managed a smile. "Alright, let's get you dressed."
The servants accompanied them into their room.
Then, Elowen and Sophia appeared. Their wet hair clung to their chubby cheeks, looking utterly adorable.
"Mommy, could you please dress me?" Elowen said, rubbing her face against Thalassa's leg, purring for affection like a kitten.
