Georgia approached the hotel front desk, her heart pounding in her chest as she spotted two police officers poring over guest registrations. It appeared to be a routine check to ensure all guest information was accurate and up-to-date.
"Hi there, I'm staying in room 2203," Georgia announced, stepping forward to make herself known to the authorities.
One of the officers looked at her skeptically, "The room was registered under a gentleman's name, with an expired passport."
Georgia's face flushed with anxiety as she quickly tried to explain the mix-up. "He's my boyfriend. He didn't realize his passport had expired, so he accidentally used it for the booking. If there's a problem, I can give you my info instead." She held out her driver's license as she spoke.
The officer didn't take the card from her, still uncertain. "You claim to be this man's girlfriend. Do you have any proof?"
Georgia felt her temper rising at the question. She had a notorious bad temper, but the thought of Alaric and Hertha, still asleep and potentially waiting for her to come back and, well, 'seal the deal' with Alaric, made her reconsider her immediate reaction.
She took a deep breath, reining in her anger, and addressed the officer with as much composure as she could muster. "The gentleman's name is Alaric, he's the second son of the Falconer Group. I'm Georgia, the Reed Group heiress. There's been talk of our engagement all over the news. You can look it up if you don't believe me."
The officer glanced at the name on the driver’s license – indeed it read 'Georgia' – and his partner quickly checked the news on his phone. There, prominently featured in recent headlines, was the news of a proposed union between the Reed and Falconer families.
"Ah, my apologies, Mr. Falconer and Ms. Reed. Your relationship is not in question," the officer said after confirming the news.
"But why would Mr. Falconer use an expired passport knowingly?" the other officer asked, still cautious.
Georgia fought off a wave of panic, "He was drunk, not really aware of what he was doing. I apologize on his behalf."
Her politeness seemed to do the trick. "No harm done. Just make sure it doesn't happen again, Ms. Reed. We'll update the registration with your information, and then you can get some rest," the second officer said, handing Georgia's license back to the hotel clerk for the records.
Georgia nodded her thanks to the officers, turned, and headed back to her room. As soon as she was out of sight, her face twisted into a grimace. She was furious at the interruption and eager to get back to her schemes.
Back in front of the room, she opened the door, her heart leaping with anticipation as she prepared to approach Alaric. But the sounds that greeted her stopped her. In the dim light, she could make out the silhouettes of two figures on the bed, moving together in a rhythm of passion, their breaths heavy and intertwined.
The other bed was empty.
Georgia felt her world shatter in an instant. She was frozen, her heart pounding painfully in her chest. Before her, the man's vigor left her breathless, and after the frenzy of their intimacy, he lay there spent, with Hertha silent beside him.
Georgia wanted to scream, to rage, but she feared drawing the attention of the police. Tears streamed down her face, her sobs muffled by her own hand clamped over her mouth.
Shaking, she moved closer, standing at the foot of the bed, watching the two figures whose breaths still hadn't settled. It tormented her with every sound.
She felt anger, madness, and betrayal all at once, her body trembling uncontrollably like a leaf in the wind.
