Thalassa had dozed off for a short nap, but upon waking up, she found the house eerily quiet—Evelyn was nowhere to be seen. She searched every nook and cranny of their cozy suburban home, but her mother remained elusive.
Just then, her cellphone began to ring with an urgency that sent a chill down her spine. She picked up the call, her heart thumping against her chest.
"Thalassa, your mom had an accident. Oh, it's bad, honey, real bad. You need to go to the hospital right away. The ambulance just took her..." The voice on the other end belonged to a friend of Evelyn’s from the card room. Her tone was a mixture of breathless panic and morbid excitement.
Thalassa's world spun. It felt as if her blood had turned to ice, her entire body numbed by the shock. The phone slipped from her trembling fingers, crashing onto the floor.
It took a moment for her to regain some semblance of composure. Breathing unevenly, she stumbled towards the door, her mind a chaotic whirlpool of fear and frustration.
Shakily, she made her way out of the house, trying to muster the strength to rush to the hospital. But that woman’s words echoed in her mind, painting a gruesome picture that sapped her strength, leaving her legs as wobbly as overcooked spaghetti.
As she lurched out the door, a sleek black Rolls-Royce pulled up in the driveway. David greeted her with a warm smile, "Ms. Everhart."
He thought to himself, Thalassa probably didn't know about the surprise Mr. Sinclair had planned for her. The man had splurged on an array of engagement rings, ready to pop the question. Those star-crossed lovers were finally going to seal their fateful bond. David genuinely felt happy for Thalassa.
But Thalassa had no time for pleasantries or for David's cheerful ignorance. Weak-kneed, yet determined, she hurried past him, intent on hailing a cab to the hospital. The distress in her heart made her limbs feel like jelly, and even though she tried to move quickly, her legs betrayed her, nearly making her fall.
"Thalassa!" A strong arm caught her just in time, and a deep, concerned voice filled her ears. "Thalassa, what's wrong?"
Choking back sobs, Thalassa clutched at Lysander's clothes with trembling hands. "Take me to the hospital... please, the hospital..."
