What could have driven such an optimistic and resilient woman down this path of no return?
Susan glanced at Thalassa and Astrid, a satisfied smirk on her face as she continued, "Just before Evelyn died, she got a call that shook her to the core, sent her running straight toward a running truck. Want to know who she was talking to? What was said?"
By now, Thalassa and Astrid were so grief-stricken they were practically catatonic.
They had no interest left to deal with Susan.
Without waiting for a response, Susan played the voicemail on her phone. The call had been from her mother, Lucy.
She had been right there, making sure Lucy's words were recorded.
The playback of Lucy's last conversation with Evelyn started, every word loud and clear.
Lucy accused Evelyn of seducing Bruce and shamelessly sleeping with him. Then she dropped the bombshell.
Bruce had AIDS!
At the mention of AIDS, Evelyn's sobs became audible over the recording—despair, and then the sound of a phone smashing to the ground. The shattering noise was quickly followed by the screeching brakes of a vehicle and the ear-piercing skid of tires on asphalt.
Hearing this, Thalassa trembled, her lips quivering. She felt utterly drained of strength.
Even though she wasn't Evelyn, just listening to that recording made her feel the desperation and agony that Evelyn must have felt.
Why wasn't she by her mother's side? If she had been there, she could have offered warmth and comfort, helping her mother through the ordeal.
