As Thalassa stepped out of the car, Alaric's voice caught her off guard, "If you really love Lysander, you shouldn't let minor setbacks defeat you. True love means fighting through the storms to be together."
Thalassa's breath hitched, but she continued to move, closing the car door behind her with a wave, "Goodbye, Mr. Falconer."
Turning, she made her way toward the apartment complex. The word 'love' had never crossed between her and Lysander.
Did Lysander love her? He had never said.
And did she love Lysander? The mere thought choked her, a crushing pressure.
She had told herself to let go, believing that being strangers with Lysander was for the best. Now, someone else had taken her place by his side. She should have felt relieved, yet her heart ached with a relentless pain. Wanting to let go but being unable to was the true agony.
Knowing it was impossible but still clinging on was the ultimate helplessness.
Thalassa suddenly understood the persistence Leopold had shown her. Each time she urged him to move on and find another woman to marry, it was like twisting a knife in his heart.
Ironically, she had thought she was doing him a favor.
In this life, she had wronged Leopold, who had even sacrificed his life to free her from Lysander's control.
Now, achieving freedom was the least she could do to honor Leopold's memory. Only by letting go could she truly be free. Owing Leopold in this life, she vowed to repay him in the next, though she knew there was no chance now.
