Georgia and Alaric had just resettled at their table when the waiter approached with their order. Spotting Georgia in the corridor, he offered a polite, "Miss, your steak..."
Georgia spun around, her eyes blazing with fury at the waiter. Catching sight of the steak tray he carried, her irritation boiled over. She marched forward, swiping the tray from his grasp, exclaiming, "The evening's ruined, why bother eating now? Couldn't you have been a bit quicker?"
The steak, fresh from the grill, tumbled onto the waiter, eliciting a sharp hiss of pain.
Startled and in pain, the waiter stumbled back, dropping the tray with a cry.
The clattering tray narrowly missed Georgia's feet. She instinctively stepped back, glaring at the waiter. "So, it's my fault you're slow? And you dare get mad?" she snapped.
"This is supposed to be a fine-dining place, right? Is this the kind of service you offer? Do you have any idea who I am? Could you afford the consequences if I were injured? Get your manager now!" Georgia demanded, hands on her hips, her anger palpable.
The waiter's hand was burned red, trembling from the pain, but he hastily responded, "Miss, please, don't be upset. We'll replace your steak..."
"Of course, you'll replace it. And you'll apologize on your knees! Your delay caused my husband to leave without eating. You've ruined our evening! How do you plan to make this right?" Georgia's rage knew no bounds.
The manager rushed over, assessing the mess before scolding the waiter, "What have you done? You've upset our guests!"
With his head down, the waiter clenched his teeth, saying nothing.
After reprimanding the waiter, the manager turned to Georgia with a respectful tone, "Ms. Whitman, please, let's calm down. We'll offer you a complimentary meal of double the value and have the waiter apologize."
"This isn't just about an apology anymore. Because of your staff's negligence, my husband left without dinner. Do you understand today was crucial for mending our relationship? Just one dinner could have made everything right, and now he's gone, our relationship more strained than ever. All because of your waiter! Besides kneeling and apologizing, I expect compensation of $20,000 for the damage caused!" Georgia's demands were outrageous.
The waiter, upon hearing the demand for $20,000, looked up in shock and fear.
Coming from a humble background, working part-time to pay for college, $20,000 was an astronomical sum for him.
Pale with fear, the young waiter begged, "Miss, I served as quickly as I could. The kitchen staff can attest to that. Please, forgive me..."
"Why should I forgive you? You've made a mistake, strained my relationship, and now you argue? Kneel and apologize this instant!" Georgia commanded, pointing accusingly.
Trembling with humiliation and fear, the waiter was at his breaking point.
But as he was about to kneel, a hand reached out, pulling him back up. "Don't kneel!"
