Faye didn't even glance back, as if she hadn't heard Thalassa's plea. She quickened her pace and in no time, she was out of sight.
Once again, Thalassa was left alone and helpless.
She tried to get up, but the pain that shot through her sprained ankle was unbearable.
If she forced herself to walk, she might end up permanently damaging her leg.
With no other choice, she stayed put, hoping that someone else might come up the mountain.
But the sky was dark and heavy with storm clouds; occasional flashes of lightning streaked across the horizon. Night was closing in.
The chances of someone braving this weather to come up the mountain were slim to none.
She would have to wait out the night and hope for rescue in the morning.
Thalassa pulled her knees to her chest, resting her chin on top of them. She curled herself into a ball, thinking that she might be safer this way.
The surrounding wilderness was filled with the eerie sounds of insects and birds. Every now and then, the cry of a wild animal would echo through the valley, sending chills down her spine.
Suddenly, she heard the cry of monkeys, which was growing louder and closer. Thalassa's heart raced, and she gripped her knees tighter.
Were there monkeys coming?
Monkeys were known to venture out more in this thunderstorm weather. Also, their temperaments were unpredictable. They were also hostile to human beings.
They were far more intimidating than any snake or lizard. When monkeys attacked, they didn't hesitate to bite and scratch.
There was a news story once, about a man who had been torn apart by a troop of monkeys in the wild.
As Thalassa remembered the story, her heart was fraught with dread. She held her breath, fearing that the monkeys might detect her presence.
