Karen left Dorothy stunned. She found herself involuntarily revisiting Maxton’s statement in her head.
“The only family you have left in this world is me..."
"The only family..."
No!
She still had the baby growing inside of her.
Suddenly, Dorothy lifted her eyes, meeting Karen's gaze.
The wind was rustling, creating a soft sound.
Karen, for once, caught on quickly. She cleared her throat. "You're not going to…"
"I won't let Everett know." Dorothy spoke lightly, yet her tone was firm.
"No! Do you know how hard it is to be a single mother?" Karen had a relative who was a single mother, so she knew the struggles all too well. And Dorothy should know it too. Her own mother had been in the same situation, hadn’t she?
"I know."
"But you still…"
Kenneth cut Karen off. He had been standing by silently the whole time. "Dorothy, whether you want to keep the baby or not, it's your choice. Think about it carefully."
"Never mind, I was just saying." Dorothy dropped her gaze; her voice was calm but distant. "I'm a bit tired; I'll go rest in the car for a while. There are still some things to handle at the funeral home. I'll go back later."
"Okay."
