"Did he agree?!" Karen's eyes were as round and wide as saucers.
She thought it would take a while for Everett to agree.
Dorothy didn't respond, and seeing his younger cousin about to chatter away, Kenneth intervened just in time. "I'll drive you home, Dorothy. Have a good chat, and be careful not to hurt yourself... or the child in your belly."
He was intentionally reminding her to gauge Dorothy's reaction.
If she had merely decided on a whim to keep the child, then she wouldn't be concerned about its safety. She would be indifferent. But if she genuinely wanted to keep it, even if it was just a fleeting thought, she would instinctively agree.
The air seemed to freeze, and those few seconds felt like an eternity.
Dorothy slowly lifted her head. Her voice was so hoarse that it was almost unrecognizable. "Can I... keep the baby?"
Was she not following in her mother's footsteps then?
She didn't even know what to do next. She would keep the child, and then what?
"Of course you can. That way, you'll have a family member in this world who shares your blood." Kenneth's gaze was sincere, warm, and comforting, continuously shining a warm heart on her and trying to brighten her world.
Karen chimed in enthusiastically, gripping Dorothy's hand. "When you give birth, I'll be the godmother! Your baby will definitely be beautiful. I can't wait for you to have your baby!"
Their expectant gazes made Dorothy feel a complex emotion well up within her, and her eyes began to sting.
Indeed, even though she had lost her mother, there were still people in the world who cared for her and who were always by her side.
"I'll think about it."
...
By the time they returned to the Bay Residence, it was getting dark.
