Dorothy instinctively knew who the “he” was referring to.
“No. He’ll get ticked off if I always have him pick me up at Bay Residence.”
What she just said seemed to visibly lower the atmospheric pressure around the man across from her. His eyes were like ice daggers that pierced through her heart, causing her to tremble and bleed.
Suddenly, Everett lifted his hand.
Dorothy flinched subconsciously before realizing that he was simply reaching for a cigarette in his pocket. He lit it and took a deep drag.
It seemed like this was the only way he could maintain his usual cold demeanor.
Being a neat freak, he never smoked inside the house. Not once.
She was aware that Everett must be failing to suppress his emotions now. He was afraid he might do something impulsive or something he might loathe.
“Everett, you just got out of the hospital. Don’t smoke.” Dorothy reached out to snatch the cigarette away, but Everett evaded her like he usually would with other women.
Nevertheless, he didn’t continue smoking. Instead, he snuffed the cigarette out and took a few steps back. “Go pack your things. I’m sorry; I lost my composure earlier.”
His indifferent tone reinstated their roles as boss and assistant.
Dorothy felt a lump in her throat, and her whole body began to go numb and ache. It was as if she had been struck hard.
She had been his favorite for too long. It had been so long that she had forgotten that Everett was a golden boy. He had his own pride and was worshiped by countless women. He was a dream partner who was meant to be adored.
So long that she had forgotten Everett was a distant and cold CEO.
“Okay.” Dorothy responded softly and walked away.
She thought Everett would leave then. She even contemplated that, given his current attitude, there might be a chance the wedding tomorrow could be canceled, and he would go directly to get a divorce.
But when she had packed and returned to the foyer, she found that Everett was still standing there.
“How come you haven't left?”
“He didn’t come to get you, and it’s hard to get a cab here. I’ll give you a lift.” He was still considerate; he just wasn’t as warm as before.
