Despite his resources and capabilities, he could have easily manipulated Dorothy into staying by his side. But he didn’t. He couldn’t bear the thought of Dorothy getting hurt. He wanted Dorothy to be happy. If her happiness couldn’t include him, he’d rather disappear.
“But she’s already hurt you so much! I can’t stand to see it anymore, Everett! Just give me the word, and I’ll find out who her husband is and let him know who he’s messed with! If that doesn’t work, I’ll confront her! I’ll make Dorothy come back to you, even if it means dragging her back!”
“No…” Everett’s voice finally broke, barely able to conceal his desolation. “I really love her, but it’s time for me to let go.”
…
Instead of returning to the construction site, Dorothy went back to her hotel.
She lay down on the bed without even taking off her coat or setting down her purse.
Everett's voice kept replaying in her head.
Truth be told, she missed Everett. She wanted to record his voice and listen to it when she felt like she was losing control, so she could find some sort of peace.
Like a junkie finding relief in their addiction.
But reality wouldn't allow it.
There were too many complications. She had to remind herself to stay away from Everett.
Her phone rang abruptly from inside her purse, making Dorothy sit up. Tears fell from her eyes down to her coat, and only then did she realize that she was crying.
