Heather, across the table, was more flustered than him, but she pulled herself together faster than Jeffrey.
"So, you claim to trust me, yet you're digging into me?" She was no fool and instantly grasped the situation, "If you truly trusted me, you would've dialed this number with your own cell, not some random one! Aren't you just afraid that if it's me, I'd recognize your number?"
Jeffrey was at a loss for words.
Indeed, he hesitated at the last moment and opted to dial using his assistant's private number, just to avoid that!
But was that the crux of the matter?
"Heather, have you lost your mind? Do you really intend to harm Everett's child? He's just a boy; how could you do such a thing!"
"I haven't done anything to him; it’s just that Everett's parents wanted to see the kid, so I had him taken away!" Heather had already prepared her cover story in case things went south, readily throwing Amanda under the bus.
But Jeffrey wasn't a fool; he just didn't want to think too much about it!
"If his parents really wanted to see the kid, you wouldn't have taken him to some remote warehouse, you would've handed him directly to his parents!"
"I, I just..."
"Stop making up excuses. I won't be fooled by you again! I'm going to see Everett right now."
He hung up, leaving Heather genuinely scared.
Before Jeffrey could leave his office, Heather rushed over from the legal department.
She looked downright disheveled, a far cry from her usual grace and poise.
"You can't go to Everett! He must not find out about this!"
"And then what? Do you want me to help you keep hiding this? Heather, I just regret not telling Everett sooner that you even laid a hand on Dorothy's mother!"
