A Maiden For The Lycan novel Chapter 4

My long straight hair played and danced to the soft wind, and a few locks fell into my eyes. The driver stood stiffly by my side, seemingly on high alert. And he had every right to be sweating buckets. He gulped down noisily before raising a hand to knock on the door. But he didn’t have the time to carry out the action before the door of the castle opened, revealing an old man in formal attire, looking better than I would have guessed a man his age would. He had a deep penetrating gaze that left my mouth parched, and made me want to cower away in fear.

Heavens have mercy! I mentally cried out.

I quickly averted my gaze.

“By order of the council, I am here to deliver Cora Fill to his excellency…”

The driver didn’t get to finish before the man cut in, “Kindly spare me the speech.”

His tone of voice was calm, and yet held a hint of annoyance and warning. The driver nodded curtly and cast his gaze down. His fear was almost palpable.

And to be honest, his fear was my own.

“You may now leave,” he was then dismissed unceremoniously.

The driver didn’t need to be told twice, and hastily went to the car, leaving me with a stranger I wasn’t eager to get acquainted with.

I debated over what to do or say, not wanting to make the renowned Lucian Knight snap at me. I ended up not saying anything, and staring at the buttons of his immaculately white shirt.

I’d rather not meet his eyes and die a nasty death, thank you very much.

“My master shall meet you and decide your fate, Miss Cora,” the man said in a tone that was almost agreeable.

My master? Miss Cora? I mentally echoed, aghast and slightly dumbfounded. This wasn’t Lucian Knight?

But then again, how stupid could I be? Why would Lucian Knight open the door himself?

“I can sense your confusion,” he said with a quirk to his lips. “I am Sebastian, master Lucian’s butler and servant.”

“Pleasure to meet you. Cora,” I said impulsively, and wanted to bash my head into the nearest wall for my mouth’s impudence and stupidity.

I was a nobody, worse than an omega… I was wolfless, and should know better than to take such liberties. I was not supposed to take airs.

I weighed down my options. I could follow this butler to my doom or try to make a run for it… but what were the odds of me outrunning a werewolf or a lycan? Exactly! None.

Okay, I didn’t really have a choice in the matter. I could only follow the man to his master. What was going to become of me? Would my begging the infamous man to spare my life even work? Or should I opt for the dignified end?

There’s nothing dignified about dying at the hand of a bloodthirsty lycan, a part of me reasoned.

My heart rate increased with each step I took. I didn’t even observe my surroundings, too engrossed as I was in my musings. Besides, I was looking at my feet to begin with.

“Are you okay?” The butler asked in a concern-filled tone.

“Peachy,” I decided to lie through my teeth. And he was courteous enough not to ask, or call me out on my lie.

“So long as you are polite, the master won’t bite,” he then supplied just as we neared a heavy wooden door.

Right! I mentally scoffed with an eye-roll. Trying to put me at ease with fake reassurances? Seriously?

He knocked on the door, and it wasn’t long before I heard a deep velvety voice instruct us to come in.

This is it, I told myself in utter dejection. I never truly got to enjoy life but I had some pleasant moments...

Which were all fake, a part of me quipped.

I heaved a sigh. I had fallen for the wrong man. Not only was he out of my league, but he was also deceitful to the bone. I had been so easy to fool and to toy with too. A smile here, a sweet gesture there, and I had been a goner.

At least, I won’t live with regrets, I tried to cheer myself up as the butler opened the door.

And that was when I looked up for the first time since I stepped foot in the castle.
