"She got away," Joan replied sadly. When she got into the ward, the woman had already plunged a knife into Jessica's belly before turning on her heels.
The doctor had only got out of Jessica's ward after some time.
"Doctor, how is she doing?" Joan asked as she wiped away her tears.
The doctor took off his mask and shook his head with a grim look on his face. "I'm sorry to say that we did not manage to save the baby. The mother, however, is in a stable condition.
Nevertheless, she will need some quiet time to recuperate."
Baby? What baby? Was Jessica pregnant?
Flabbergasted at the revelation, Caspian wrapped his hands around his head. Why am I not even aware that she's pregnant? Why didn't Jessica tell me?
The truth was, even Jessica had no idea that she was pregnant. The poor woman had to endure the loss of her child without even knowing that she had the baby in the first place.
"Why are you guys all here? I'm alright. I just suffered a minor injury." Jessica managed a weak smile while she lay on the hospital bed.
Why is she so stubborn? How long is she planning to keep this from us?Should I tell her about the baby? She's going to be in despair if she knows about it. Joan was on the fence about divulging the news to her friend, fearing that it might be too much of a shock to her.
"Joan, look at you. Why are you crying? I'm really alright!" Jessica quipped.
The group left after chatting with her, leaving Joan and Jessica in the ward alone.
"Joan, you should know why I didn't let you leave," Jessica said in a serious manner.
Why would Nancy be so sad if I'm only hurt like that? She should be relieved that I'm actually alive.
However, Jessica found the grim look on Nancy's face alarming. Have I been diagnosed with some sort of terminal illness? Or do I not have much time left?
Ever since venturing into business, Jessica had improved by leaps and bounds in picking up on subtle expressions in other people.
