Despite her thorny start at Anderson Logistics, Eden settled into her new role in Matthew's area with no issues.
She'd worried she'd have a hard time getting used to a 9 to 5 desk job, but both her new boss and Brenda made life easy for her.
Matthew was a dream boss to work for. He never made any unnecessary demands on her. Never screamed or lost his shit with her even when she fudged crucial reports a few times. He was also kind enough to let her finish work at 4:00 PM every day so she can rush home to be with her son.
Brenda was another gem. As her live-in nanny, she not only looked after Aiden but took care of the chores too, something Eden appreciated greatly because all she had to do when she got home was to spend time with her little boy or trudge through her home improvements.
By the end of her first week in her new job, Eden had repainted the bathroom and toilet with the help of tons of DIY videos on YouTube, and the guys from the Bathroom Place had installed her shiny new tub. She was yet to relax in it because there was always something to do in the evenings.
She was grateful for the lack of free time, though; it kept her mind from wandering to places she shouldn't, places like Liam.
She still seethed every time she remembered the way their last confrontation had played out. Yes, she was wrong for neglecting her duties, but throwing the plate of cookies on the floor was uncalled for. Not even his son threw tantrums like that.
"Ugh, why are you even thinking about him," she groaned as she mussed up her hair in frustration.
She rolled away from her desk and swivelled around in her chair to stare at the smokers on the rooftop of Hayes and Jones Attorneys. They were all serious men and women in expensive dark suits handling all kinds of high profile cases—from commercial to divorces and custody battles.
Judging by the number of times they came out daily, it was a stressful job because they all seemed happy to fill their lungs with cancer.
As she watched them, Eden wondered now if she should take up smoking. She'd tried it with Sienna back in high school. They'd both hated it and quit after they almost choked to death on their first cigarette. Maybe her lungs were now strong enough to handle it.
A phone rang somewhere, and it took her a little while to realise it's hers because no one ever called her office line. If Matthew or Lucy—his very haughty PA who seemed to have it in for her—wanted something they walked to her office, tapped on her door and delivered their instructions.
"Hello," she breathed into the phone, irritated at the caller for cutting into her afternoon zen moment.
"You took your time," Liam said on his end. He sounded equally irritated. But Eden was unfazed. Being irritated at her was his default mode.
She saw him almost daily and everywhere—in common areas, meetings, hallways and elevators. But apart from a courteous nod from her and a permanent scowl from him, they'd had no contact until now.
"How can I be of assistance, Mr Anderson?" She asked politely.
