Josie also felt it was inappropriate, but the words had already been spoken and couldn't be taken back. She shook her head, saying it was nothing.

As she turned to leave, Dexter stopped her. The lake mirrored their figures.

“Do you think I let Grape take your surname because she's a girl?”

With the conversation at this point, Josie turned to face him again. “Isn't it? If she were a boy, you, or the Russell family, would be eager to include him in the family register.”
