Zach's eyes were practically blazing. “Mom, why didn't you call me for supper?”

Claudia shot him a glance. “The last time you were willing to eat what I cooked, you were about her age, weren't you?”

Claudia pointed at Grape.

Zach locked eyes with Grape, frustration welling up within him.

Surprisingly, when Grape saw Laura, she immediately slid down from her seat and called out sweetly, “Aunt Laura!”

With a slight curve of her lips, Laura crouched down. “Grape, it's been a while.”

There were familiar faces around, which gradually eased Grape's nerves. She reached out and grabbed her mother's hand. “Mommy, Aunt Laura is here. I like it here,” she said.

Josie curled her lips, asking Laura, “It's already so late. Are you still going out?”

It was clear that they were dressed for going out.

“Yes. We have something to attend to,” Laura responded. She then gently pinched Grape's face and said, “I will bring you a toy when I return.”

Zach had long since grown impatient. “Can we speed this up?”

Grape tilted her head, her innocence shining through. “Are you also my uncle?”

Uncle? The term had Zach utterly baffled. He glanced at Josie, a scoff escaping him, laced with pure disdain. “Who's your uncle?”

Grape looked utterly bewildered, scared out of her wits.

Claudia was the first to slam the table. “Are you a child just like her? If you continue this ridiculous behavior, don't bother coming home!”

Quickly, Laura ushered Zach toward the exit.

Watching the two depart from Olsen Residence, one after the other, Josie took hold of Grape's hand, patiently explaining, “Philomena, this uncle of yours has a bad temper. It's best if you don't initiate conversation with him when it's not necessary. Just pretend you don't know him, all right?”
