The person next to Dexter teased Grape, “Kid, do your mommy and daddy always talk like this? They're so polite to each other.”

Grape's eyes darted around.

Josie clenched the hem of her clothes, her heart racing wildly. If Grape were to say anything out of line, everything would be over.

Dexter tightened his grip around Grape, who responded, “They rarely see each other...”

This was indeed the truth. Josie breathed a sigh of relief. Grape was smart.

The person wore a slightly disappointed expression and said in a low voice, “Poor child.”

Dexter put Grape down, gently patting her head. “Good girl, I have some work to finish up. Go home with Mommy first.”

Grape was reluctant to let go. “When will you be coming back?”

“I'll go back when I'm done here.” Dexter glanced at Josie. “If you can't handle it, seek help from the Russell family.”

Josie tried her best to stay calm. “Who specifically?”

“Ms. Marilyn. She's been taking care of Grandpa for years, and she loves children. She would do a good job.”

“Okay.”

Dexter stood up, his black trench coat carrying a faint scent of tobacco. He stood in the dimly lit shadows, looking significantly more haggard than before.

Josie held onto Grape and a sudden thought struck her. “Ms. Marilyn hasn't been in good health and she's always been worried about you. If she asks when you'll be back... what should I tell her?”

Her eyes were bright and filled with anticipation as she awaited his response.

He remained silent for half a minute before squeezing out a smile. “We'll see.”

Josie's heart sank heavily.
