“So useless! All of them are good-for-nothings!” Sophia opened her eyes wide in fury. 

“Mom, we’re talking about a prison here. It’s good enough that I was 

able to find someone to do the work for you. 

“His movements in there are limited. Unlike the outside, he can’t just do as he wishes. So, please just wait a little longer. We should hear back very soon.” 

“Wait? How can I bear to wait? Each day that Jeffrey is still alive… My heart is just like a cat on a hot tin roof. I can’t sleep nor eat well!” 

In her nervousness, Sophia began to pace. She said, “I’m certain that Alyssa and Jasper have met with him. Plus, they are surely thinking of a way to make him open his mouth and testify against me! 

“If I let him live… It would only be a matter of time before he rats me 

out!” 

Betty also knew that the stakes were high. But she truly had no better

“Who is it?” Sophia asked as she walked into the living room.

Rory greeted her, then said respectfully, “Madam Sophia, Mr. J sent me to pass a message to you. Please accompany him in attending the horse race this weekend.” 

Sophia yanked the door open. “Javier asked me to go with him? I’m not grounded anymore?” she asked. She was so excited that her 

voice was trembling. 

“You are the one who has always accompanied Mr. Javier to attend the annual horse racing event. This year will not be an exception.” 

“Great! I will surely attend. I will be there!” 

She closed the door. Tears were welling up in her eyes. She was in a frenzy of delight. 

After a month of being grounded, she was finally about to be able to see the light of day again. 

Was this proof that Javier was no longer mad at her? Was the tension between them alleviated now?
