Maja's shoulders sagged instantly, a queasy feeling rising in her gut before she dashed to the restroom.

Beck promptly summoned the chef.

"Let's rework her meal plan. She's been off beef lately. Let’s switch it to pork and chicken, and add some more warming ingredients to her soups."

The chef quickly presented a menu. "Mr. Sanders, here are the fruits and vegetables Ms. Maja’s been eating, all air-freighted from the best farms, and the milk as well. Is there anything you'd like to add?"

Beck thought for a moment about Maja's preferences and crossed off a few vegetables.

By now, Maja had returned from the restroom. "Beck, no need to be so cautious. I just felt a bit upset earlier, that's all."

Still, Beck wasn't ready to let her out of his sight.

"Don’t head back to Greenfield just yet. Stay at the Sanders family estate to recuperate. Meanwhile, I’ll have Tyler dig around back home for any news, to see what Carol's angle is."

After saying this, he glanced at Tyler.

Tyler immediately raised his hand as if he was taking an oath. "Absolutely, it's on me. I’m the one who blabbered, so I’ll take responsibility."

Maja's gaze then fell on Fitch. "Is Zoey doing alright?"

Fitch stiffened, a crease forming between his brows, "Yeah."

Known for being a man of few words, he said nothing more and was about to leave when he heard Maja add,

"Zoey was hurt because of Wendy’s doing. She had someone run her down. I haven't bothered to bring it up online. The poor girl's been through too much. Wendy didn't just steal her puppy; that car accident nearly took Zoey's life. Zoey's always been a bit timid, slaving away for her mom since she was little, never knowing any real warmth. When her mom showed up at the office, she cursed Zoey with the vilest words, and even demanded I fire her. She can't stand to see Zoey doing well, to the point of wishing Zoey would be a mistress to her ex."

"So if Zoey’s mom says anything to smear her, don’t believe it. Zoey’s the type to repay kindness with kindness, even if she's betrayed. She'd just lick her wounds in silence. But don't mistake her for weak; she always pulls through."

"Fitch, but she might not always make it through. Maybe one day she won’t. Ian and I have been through so much, but the clearest lesson we've learned is that life is unpredictable."

The weight of those words, 'life is unpredictable,' coming from Maja was profound.

If she hadn't gotten entangled with Ian from the start, there wouldn't be so many complications.
