The last sliver of sunlight faded away at the horizon, and the atmosphere in the neighborhood grew heavy with tension.

The families, aware of their confinement, dared not make any sudden moves. They all sat in the living room, silently listening to the negotiations happening outside.

The shouting had ceased, leaving everyone uncertain about what was to come. Their lives were all in the hands of Bernard.

And Bernard, he had lost his mind - or perhaps he had been mad all along.

He found his seat and slowly tapped his fingers on the armrest. When the silence persisted outside, a smirk played on his lips.

He turned to Lingery behind him and said, "Look at these people. The moment their wives and children are in danger, they clam up. They can't spout their self-righteous drivel anymore. Such hypocrites, aren't they? What makes them any different from me?"

Lingery poured him a cup of tea, "Please, have a drink."

Bernard took a sip before asking, "How's Rachel doing?"

"She got the real Ian out, but Dylan didn't fall for it. Thought he'd go after them himself, but he had the Sanders family call a press conference right away."

"He's somewhat interesting, I'll give him that."

Bernard drank half the cup of tea, his gaze drifting towards the hibernation chamber where Maja lay.

"It's a shame, really. She's pregnant and the data's unstable. Otherwise, she would've been the first one for the experiment."

His son might be of concern, but deep down, it was his wife he cared for the most.

"Don't worry, professor. Doctor said the surgery will be done by eleven tonight."

Bernard slowly closed his eyes. It had been ages since he had a good rest, and sleep eluded him now more than ever.

With Yvonne's return imminent, he found it even harder to find peace. After years of plotting, his wish was about to be realized, and it felt surreal.

In the room, Sarah stood in front of a pile of data when Queena questioned her, "Are you sure about injecting Compound 112? Wasn't it Compound 111 in the previous records?"
