Maja felt totally wiped out. She swapped her shoes at the entrance and decided to head to her room.

Her eyes were still puffy, and her gait was a little off.

Ian watched her, stood up, and said, "Penny."

Too exhausted to chat, Maja walked into her room and flopped onto her bed.

Ian followed her in but just leaned against the door, watching her lying motionless.

He approached her, hesitated for a minute, then slowly reached out to gently pat her head.

Her hair was still short, now all tousled, and her hand was clenching the bed sheet beneath her.

He sat by the bed, gently patting her back.

Maja's tears were still falling silently as she heard him say, "The medicine you gave me that day caused a severe allergic reaction. I was in critical care all night."

She froze as if under a spell.

She didn't know he was allergic to the medication.

Hearing her apology, the last bit of resentment in Ian's heart vanished.

"If anyone else did this to me, I would stop at nothing to get back at her."

Maja didn't say anything. She just felt him slowly moving closer, whispering in her ear.

"You're having a tough day, aren't you?"

She froze again, disbelief flickering in her eyes.

Did he already know?

But the hospital was supposed to be confidential. Was he mocking her in this humiliating way?

She bit her lip, her whole body shaking.

Ian's voice was even softer: "The guy from the past two days was me."

At his words, Maja looked up at him.

Her eyes were swollen, and her face was streaked with tears.

Shock registered in her eyes first, then turned into anger.

"Ian!"

She sprang up from the bed but was pushed back down by him.

This was the first time she had called his name like this, and she was so angry that she was in tears.

Ian held her down by her neck, not letting her get up.

"You almost killed me, and I can't get back at you?"

Maja was shaking all over, wanting to bite a piece off him, her tears falling even harder.

"Phelps Herrington said if I'd arrived at the hospital half an hour later, I would have been goners. Penny, you're much more ruthless than I am. I've never thought of taking your life."
