Ellis threw his legs on the belly of Benjamin, and one of his arms was resting behind his head. He held a book in his hand and didn't say a word to us.
'TH go to Anthony tomorrow." Ellis smiled and said, "I'll ask Anthony to teach me painting."
Holding Ellis tightly, I said softly," Ellis, listen to me, if you don't like learning painting, then you don't have to. There are things in this life that you are supposed to be good at and also things that you just are not. Don't dwell on the latter, okay?"
Ellis said aggrievedly, "But Grandfather asked me to learn."
I asked, "Do you like it yourself?"
Ellis shook his head and said, "Although I don't like it very much, I can learn if my grandfather likes it. I don't want to let him down."
I was silent. Then I pursed my lips and looked at Benjamin.
As if sensing something, he retracted his gaze from the pages of the book and looked back at me. Under the glow of the orange lamp, his eyebrows looked slightly gentle and we looked at each other speechlessly for a while. There was a smile on Benjamin's face and his voice was clear and indifferent. He said, "When I was a child, what I had to learn was much more complicated than what he has to learn now. Compared to what I had to do all day long back then, his life is nothing but a walk in the park, if not more relaxing."
Benjamin paused for a moment before saying, "I'll send you back to the Dunn family tomorrow. You are his own grandson, do what he tells you to do."
Hearing the words of Benjamin, Ellis subconsciously pursed his lips. I hesitated for a moment and said, "There is no need to force the child so much."
Hearing this, Benjamin looked at me indifferently and said coldly, "It's not difficult for Ellis to learn. Besides, he's at the age that he's supposed to learn. He's already left behind by his peers. If he were to give up painting, what advantage would he have? Emma, I know you want the child to have a happy childhood. But that's not what he needs in his life. You are spoiling him, especially compared to Anthony."
Anthony had his own arrangements, so I was not allowed to intervene. But Ellis was a child who knew nothing.
Even though Ellis understood nothing, he also knew that he could not let his grandfather down. I knew that I should shut up now, but I still said one more sentence, "It's up to you to choose, Ellis."
Hearing this, Benjamin said coldly, "Anthony knows that it's better to learn something more to teach Emy in the future. Don't set up a bad example."
As his voice fell, Ellis said with high spirits, "I got it! Although I can't catch up with Anthony, I want to learn some things that Anthony hasn't learned yet, what do you think about the piano?"
"It's your choice." Benjamin said.
It was not until a long time later that I knew that it was not because Anthony did not study playing the piano, but because his parents were a pair of pianists themselves.
So Anthony knew how to play the piano.
After Ellis fell asleep, Benjamin put Ellis on the side of the bed. I couldn't help saying, "He's not gonna like it when he wakes up."
"I'll put him back in the middle before he wakes up." There was a small distance between us. Benjamin held my hand and put it in between us. He said in a hoarse voice, "Ellis is destined to take over the Dunn family in the future. There are things that he has to master. Learning painting is not about the arts that reside in it but to cultivate his ability to endure, his ability to undergo things, regardless of whether he likes it or not. You are well aware that he's sure to face things that he doesn't like but has to do all the same. So it's our responsibility to teach him how to do it."
No wonder Benjamin was calm, unhurried, and indifferent no matter what he had experienced.
"Perhaps our thoughts are different... You were born in a scholarly family and have your own value, teaching the children to follow the already existing examples. But I feel that no matter what kind of life they choose, they only need to feel happy. There are some things that cannot be forced into them."
This was the first time for me to discuss the issue of education with Benjamin.
"Emma, Ellis doesn't have enough selfcontrol," said Benjamin in a very low voice. "Anthony is very clear about his future, just like me and Zack when we were teenagers, and also Joel. We knew ever since we were only children that we were the inheritors of great families so we had high standards for ourselves." he continued.
"It is easy to inherit the family, but it is very difficult to guard it. Since Ellis is the son of the Dunn family, he has that on his shoulders. Since that is certain, we have to raise him in a way that would make him capable of that burden. And when he's ready for the mission he's born with, he can then choose to do whatever he wants to do."
Benjamin clenched my hand and explained, "This is his destiny as a Dunn. It might seem cruel, but that's just the way it's supposed to be. His life is already much easier compared to what I had to go through."
I sighed and said, "I see."
It was just that Benjamin did not want Ellis to be left behind by his peers, and when the time was right, he would support Ellis to do what he wanted for himself.
"I know that listening to these words will not be very comfortable for you, but the most important thing for Ellis to protect in the future is not the Dunn family."
"What is it then?" I asked curiously.
