Heartstrings on Fire novel Chapter 1020

Maggie had tried, really she had.

But in the grand scheme of things, she was, unfortunately, the one with the least choice.

Both Ethan and Jake had their own games to play, their own schemes to hatch.

But Maggie? She was left to dance to their tune.

They knew just how to manipulate her, using what she cherished most as leverage, wearing her down physically and emotionally, time and again.

Maggie's emotions were teetering on the edge.

She longed to break free from Jake's grasp.

But instead, she found herself enveloped in his arms, as he pleaded, "I'm sorry, it's all my fault. But I can't let you go. I won't doubt your loyalty to Ethan again. Let me handle the rest. I've got this."

Jake, having been by Maggie's side for so long, thought he had seen it all.

When Maggie had planned to leave, he knew Ethan must have coerced her with some tempting offer.

He hadn't expected Ethan to take such drastic measures.

Jake was always irked by Maggie's trust in Ethan.

But upon reflection, he realized some things couldn't be changed.

After all, he wasn't there when Maggie needed him the most.

How could he blame her for trusting someone who had extended a helping hand during her darkest hours?

Maggie pounded on Jake's chest, but he wouldn't let go.

Eventually, she buried her face in his chest, her voice choked with emotion, "I really... really don't want to be with you anymore."

"It's my fault, I haven't been good enough," Jake admitted.
