Agnes felt a pang in her heart upon hearing Ryder's words, but her response was nearly cold, “Ryder, I didn't come here for this. Because I don't love you, I'm not moved. I just want to know where the drug maker is.”
Ryder's eyes seemed to frost over at her words. His tone changed slightly as well, “Can't hold back anymore, huh?”
Agnes admitted, “I can't. I never thought you'd conspire with outsiders to go after Jared, Ryder. When did you become so vindictive?”
“Don't worry, he won't die. I'll get him the best lawyer. Even if he's found guilty, at most he'll get life without parole.”
Agnes looked at Ryder incredulously before managing to say, “You're vicious.”
But Ryder appeared indifferent, pulling a thorn from the cactus he was holding. “Agnes, I've said it before, for you, I'd do anything. You're all thorns, and I'll pick them off one by one until one day, you're smooth and pristine, ready to accept my embrace.”
Agnes was irritated, her eyes brimming with cold fury as she stared at Ryder. She had never imagined their relationship would come to this point since the day they met.
“Ryder, don't dream anymore. From now on, we're not even friends. State your terms.”
Ryder, unhurried, walked to the balcony, continuing to place the cactus under the sunlight. Watching his back, Agnes thought how he once was a bright young man grown under the sun, now lost in darkness beyond salvation.
Ryder came back in, “It depends on how sincere you are about saving your uncle.”
“As long as finding the drug maker proves the innocence of the Tim Group and Jared, I'll agree to your terms,” Agnes said, mentally prepared for whatever trap Ryder had set for her. She had no other choice.
“But you have to tell me, how involved are you in the drug case? Who are you in cahoots with, and who wants to frame Jared and the Tim Group?”
Ryder replied, “You ask too many questions. All I can tell you is someone wants to use your uncle against Albert’s Arms, or rather, against your formidable godfather. As for who, I don't know. I found out about the drug maker on my own, not because I conspired with them.”
Agnes frowned. Ryder knew her godfather was Reggie because, during a hospital visit in the States when Nocturne was critically ill, Reggie had come to see him. That's when Ryder found out. And now, Reggie was revealed to be Jared's biological father, entangling Jared even further in this mess. But Agnes agreed on one point: someone was using Jared and Reggie's relationship to target Albert’s Arms. After all, to outsiders, Jared was Reggie's only biological son.
Agnes had suspected there was a mole within Albert’s Arms but couldn't pin down who or understand their motives.
Agnes scoffed, “Even if you didn't conspire in the drug trafficking, watching Jared being framed and kicking him while he's down is not what a gentleman does.”
“I don't want to be a gentleman. If it means getting you, I'd rather be the villain.”
