Agnes felt a shiver run down to her fingertips. The man standing before her was a ruthless devil in disguise. Yet now, he wore a mask of deep affection.
Agnes spoke up, "Kearney, you're the one who's turned Phenix into what she is now, aren't you? You've been drugging her milk, haven't you? How could you? You went as far as to harm her."
Agnes had once thought that if Kearney had any humanity left, it was for Phenix. She believed he truly loved her. But now, Agnes realized she was mistaken. Kearney only loved himself, going to any lengths for his own ends. He used harming Phenix as a means to create this illusion. This wasn't love. It was just a twisted form of possession.
Kearney gazed at Phenix with a deep, dreamlike affection. After a long while, he stood up. When he looked at Agnes, his eyes were calm, like still water.
Kearney said, "Don't you think she's better off this way? She believes her beloved is still alive, living with her every day. This is the life she wanted. If she were to wake up, the pain would be unbearable."
"But this isn't reality; it's an illusion you've created. She'll wake up one day, and she won't be able to accept it."
"No, she won't wake up. She'll see me as him, and I'll take care of her for the rest of her life."
Kearney's words were meant to sound affectionate, but to Agnes, they were chilling.
Agnes said, "Kearney, all this tragedy is your doing. You've killed so many people and turned Phenix into nothing more than a puppet. Kearney, you'll get what's coming to you."
Agnes wasn't one for cursing, but these were the most damning words she could muster. Yet they seemed to have no effect on Kearney. He slowly walked towards Agnes. Watching him approach felt like watching a predator closing in, his presence exuding danger and coldness, ready to reveal his claws and teeth to strike at her throat at any moment.
A chill ran down Agnes's spine, and she instinctively stepped back, but she was trapped against the glass doors of the balcony, with nowhere to go.
Kearney, seeing Agnes's reaction, simply smiled, "Septima, it seems you're quite afraid of me."
Agnes was frightened. Having known Kearney for so long, she realized she had never truly seen through him. He was a devil who hid all his emotions behind a facade of gentleness. Having dealt with this devil for so long without ever realizing it, how could Agnes not be afraid?
"Kearney, what are you planning to do? Keep me locked up forever? What exactly do you want? They'll find me soon."
"They? Who do you mean? Your godfather, or your husband who's searching the world for you?"
Just thinking about Jared made Agnes's heart ache. She had been trapped here for days, cut off from the outside world. Jared must be frantic by now.
Agnes said, "Kearney, what do you want?"
Kearney simply replied, "I need you to get me the password key that Reggie has."
Agnes had a sinking feeling. Kearney was definitely using her for his own gain.
