'Oh my God! Jareth! Are you okay?' Evadne silently griped inside, then forced a laugh: "Mr. Jareth, you sure do have a lot of jokes today, enough to keep me on my toes."
"I'm serious, Ilana; I'm not joking!" Jareth got heated, his big hand reaching out to grab Evadne's shoulder, but she smoothly slipped away.
"Mr. Jareth, as I recall, I've already said all I wanted to say today. Do I have to be blunt for you to get it?"
"I know you've already rejected me."
Jareth looked at her deeply and let out a bitter laugh. "I also know you're with Cassius now, but I still want to tell you that if you ever want to turn back, I'll be right here behind you. I wouldn't mind being your backup, or even your lover!"
Evadne thought to herself, 'Lover? What do you think I am?'
But this man's gaze was truly captivating, especially now filled with a touch of melancholy. He was quite a heartthrob. No wonder he's always had the upper hand in love.
Too bad Evadne was totally immune.
Compared to him, she preferred Thaddeus's eyes, which quickened her heartbeat and were cold yet captivating.
"Ilana, who is the man who attacked Thad? Are you close to him?" Jareth asked anxiously.
"Mrs. Abernathy!"
Just as Evadne didn't know how to answer his question, Gordon, dressed in hospital garb, came over.
"Why are you out of bed?"
Evadne quickly walked past Jareth, supporting Gordon: "Even though your injuries are not serious, you suffered a mild concussion when you fell. You should rest more and not wander around."
"Mrs. Abernathy, did you save Mr. Thaddeus?" Gordon asked fervently.
"I didn't do much." Evadne replied in a low voice, feeling guilty inside.
"I knew it. I knew you still cared about him!"
"Is Mr. Thaddeus's treatment over?" Evadne swiftly changed the subject upon hearing this.
Gordon nodded, full of anticipation. "Mrs. Abernathy, could you please stay? Even if just to see Mr. Thaddeus."
Evadne took a deep breath and walked with heavy steps towards Thaddeus.
After all, it was her brother who hit him and everything happened because of her, so she couldn't just sit idly by.
In the ward, Thaddeus was leaning against the bedhead, looking out the window. Despite the scars on his face, his clear features were still remarkably handsome. His cool and proud eyes seemed a bit lonely right now, but they added a touch of fragile tenderness.
It was this face that she had loved for thirteen years.
Even now, she couldn't help but be moved, but this feeling was no longer as passionate as before.
"Mr. Thaddeus."
"About tonight, I will get to the bottom of it. Before I lose my temper, disappear from my sight!" Thaddeus's voice was cold, and his face even colder.
Evadne had always been a stubborn person since she was a child; the more people told her not to do something, the more she wanted to do it.
She walked to the bedside, fearlessly looking at the man's cold face. "Mr. Thaddeus, I'm here to apologize to you about tonight. You can express any dissatisfaction to me; if you want to pursue responsibility, you can find me. He hurt you entirely because of me, so it's my responsibility. If you want to settle this privately, I'm willing to take responsibility. If you want to handle it publicly. I think, Mr. Thaddeus, you don't want to confront your ex-wife in public. On one hand, you are a man of status and you are about to marry Ms. Acacia. Having a public spat with your ex-wife might lead to speculation and affect your image; on the other hand, if things get big, it won't be easy to explain to the family, right?"
Each of her words pierced deeply into Thaddeus's heart!
Ilana was completely standing on the side of the man who hurt him and she was defending him, taking all the responsibility for him. How could she protect him like that?
she even wanted to protect a perpetrator, then what about him, Thaddeus? He became a complete joke!
"Ilana, who is he? What is your relationship with him? Would you risk your life for him?" Thaddeus's eyes were red, and his heart was aching slightly.
"The gun wasn't real; I'm not dead and I'm fine." Evadne replied calmly.
"Is there a difference? The moment you took a bullet for him, there was no difference!"
Thaddeus tried to get out of bed, but his whole body was in pain. He had no strength so he could only beat the bed in anger. "You and I were married for three years and you always said you loved me. But look at yourself, which of your actions was out of love? Do you think I'm a fool?"
Thaddeus vented all his resentment, thanks to the influence of alcohol.
He was a highly disciplined and patient man. Back on the battlefield, he was shot twice and didn't let out a cry. But now he couldn't control his inner pain and breakdown.
"So, Mr. Thaddeus, you're angry, not because someone hit you for me or because I almost died under gunfire, but because you feel I lied to you, and you can't accept it?" Evadne felt extremely disappointed.
