The air suddenly went dead silent.
Gordon watched as the two were about to kick off again, stomping his foot in frustration. He really wanted to step in and stop the boss's rude remarks.
Evadne chuckled, her eyes like fog-enshrouded pearls, shattered but still dazzlingly brilliant. "Thaddeus, I admit, I was too arrogant, pursuing you relentlessly, being nice to you time and time again, thinking I could make you fall in love with me. In the end, all I got was self-gratification. But there's one thing you got wrong. Even if you pushed me away, I never held any grudges against you. I wanted to break up with you in peace, but you kept troubling me, destroying the last bit of dignity between us. So, I had no choice but to get rid of you, who kept disturbing my new life. Thaddeus, you were forced to marry me, and now I'm also forced to treat you this way. The only way we can both be happy is if we become strangers."
Thaddeus felt like he'd been hit in the chest with a sledgehammer, his heartbeat seemingly stopping.
"Mr. Gordon, it's late. Please take Mr. Thaddeus home."
Evadne suppressed her pain and quickly turned away again.
Those who couldn't see her love and sacrifice weren't worth her heartbreak.
Suddenly, Evadne felt a pain in her wrist. She whipped around to see Thaddeus's red eyes.
"Thaddeus, let go of me." She struggled.
As Thaddeus opened his mouth to speak, a cold voice interrupted him.
"Mr. Thaddeus, you're a man of stature, yet here you are, grabbing our future daughter-in-law at our doorstep. Isn't that a bit disgraceful?"
Evadne saw Suri and Aviana rushing over, frantically shrugged Thaddeus off, and backed away.
"Future daughter-in-law?" Thaddeus was stunned and his eyes were dull.
"Cassius brought Ilana home for our family dinner tonight. I think you understand what that means."
As she spoke, Suri affectionately put her arm around Evadne's shoulder. "Ilana is beautiful and well-mannered, and she gets along well with Cassius. Our whole family, including Chairman Emeric, is very pleased with her. We even want to arrange a time to meet Ilana's parents and set a wedding date soon."
Evadne was stunned. She knew Suri and Aviana were here to support her, but boy, were they laying it on thick!
Thaddeus felt a hollow in his chest, the cold wind whistling through.
"Mr. Thaddeus, I think you announced your engagement in the media."
Aviana fixed Thaddeus with a piercing gaze, smiling as she said, "You're about to get married. Wouldn't it be better to spend this time with your fiancée rather than bothering Ilana here? What's going on? A girl's reputation is important. If you don't care, we won't stop you, but please don't drag Ilana into this. She's now a member of our Ashbourne family. If you continue to act carelessly, we won't be so polite!"
Evadne knew Aviana was a woman of few words. Seeing her still communicating with Thaddeus rather than punching him, she guessed Suri and Myra had talked her down.
Gordon held his head, thinking, 'Mr. Thaddeus, what on earth are you doing here? Isn't this asking for trouble?'
Thaddeus's hand, which had just touched Evadne, slowly clenched into a fist, shaking slightly.
He tried to grip his fist as if trying to hold onto something, but it was as if he couldn't hold onto anything. He wasn't even sure what he was having trouble letting go of, considering it was he who decided to end their marriage.
"Ladies, it's cold tonight, and you're not dressed warmly. Let's go home."
Evadne, caught up in the moment, blurted out 'Let’s go home'. That strong sense of belonging was like an invisible and cold wall, completely isolating Thaddeus.
"Ilana, is what they're saying true?" Thaddeus's voice was hoarse and low.
Evadne took a deep breath and firmly said, "Yes."
"Okay." Thaddeus's face went pale, and he repeated 'okay' several times before slowly pulling out the black velvet jewelry box from his pocket and handing it to her.
