Mike looked up coldly, and his glasses glinted. “Professor Thompson, you’re a smart person. You don’t need me to teach you something as simple as that, do you? After a pause, he continued, “Or it’s so simple that you can’t even handle it?”
“You—” After getting provoked many times, Thompson could not help but flare up.
The man in the executive chair, however, interrupted. Deep and awful, his voice was strangely unnerving. “Stop quibbling! Professor, Mr. Corden is right in saying that you couldn’t even make a perfumer stay. Are you planning to wait until she tells everyone about what’s going on in the lab?”
“No, but…”
“No ifs or buts! I’ll let someone else take over if you can't do it.” A silence ensued while cold sweats covered Thompson’s back. Of course, he knew what the man meant.
They could not afford to tell other people about their secret. Knowing much more than Lily about the project, Thompson knew his life would be in danger if someone else took his place. Besides, he was obsessed with the experiment and wished to see it through.
“N-No, sir, no one else knows about the experiment better than I do. I’ll surely do a good job and get it done!” He stressed that he wanted the experiment to continue as well.
“Good to hear that,” his employer said. “Find a way to deal with the perfumer. As for the funding, leave us.”
In other words, it was something to do with Mike and nothing to do with Thompson.
“Yes, sir!” Thompson wiped the sweat off his forehead, exchanged a brief look with Mike, and quickly left.
Mike got up and took a few steps forward. “I have no problem funding the project, but don’t forget that you must fulfill your promise, Mr. R.”
“Don’t worry. Once I have the products, I’ll give 70% to you first. However, can you handle so many products as a businessman, Mr. Corden?”
The executive chair swiveled slightly, but the man still had his back toward his guest as if unwilling to face him.
Mike stared at the back of the chair and raised his chin with his hands in his pants pockets. “Well, don’t worry, Mr. R. Since I dare to invest so much in this project, I’m confident I’ll get my money back. However…”
He paused and lifted his eyelids. “We are partners, after all, and it’s the first time I’m meeting you in person after we communicated online. Aren’t you going to show me your face, Mr. R? Or you’re not sincere in becoming my partner?”
The executive chair stopped moving. As there was no answer, the office was in dead silence. Mike neither spoke nor moved and simply stared at the back of the black chair.
After a moment, the chair started to move and slowly turned over. A strange-looking face came into view.

Ever since Lily got her hands on the pot of agarwood, she stopped going to her studio for a few days and stayed at home to tend to the plant. Having allocated a plot of land to grow it, she read many books on its cultivation.
