Thompson was speechless.
“Those things are meaningless anyway. Could it relieve their pain and reduce their suffering? If they want to be free from pain, why don’t they just die? They won’t feel anything by then,” Rhea said nonchalantly.
Those words shocked Austin to his core. As a medical student, he did not understand how she could say such words.
‘How can she be so indifferent to other people’s lives?’
Rhea pushed Thompson to the side slightly and approached Austin. “Initially, your presence made no difference to me, but since you’ve involved yourself in this, you can no longer leave. Join us instead. What do you say to that?”
Austin looked at Rhea and felt she was a completely different person now. He thought she was adorable before this, but she became a devil with a beautiful face.
“If it’s something that would harm other people, I’ll never join you guys. I’m sorry!” Austin said.
Rhea just scoffed, clearly in disapproval of him. “What a nerd! Who cares if it’ll be beneficial or harmful? Science and technology must move forward, and the medical field must improve! All the research, from inventions that could help people work less to human evolution, needs sacrifices!
“You’ve been a doctor for so many years, so let me ask you this: Did you save all your patients’ lives?” Rhea looked Austin up and down and asked out of the blue.
“I…” Her question choked him, but he was unwilling to back down. “I couldn’t save everyone, but I tried my best! No matter what, I have no regrets, nor am I guilty of anything!”
That was how medical practitioners were supposed to be. The number of patients they saved should define them. They were humans and not God, so how could they dictate the life and death of other people?
“Haha! Not guilty of anything?” Rhea sneered. “You sound so upright and honest! If that’s the case, why did you lie to the others that you’re the miracle doctor’s secret apprentice? You’re a scammer, and I’m a cold-blooded person. None of us is better than the other, so why are you talking about those things to me?”
“I-I…” Austin was usually good with words, but he was so stunned by her that he could not utter a complete sentence.
‘This woman sure knows the right buttons to press! She’s even better than Lily at this. Rhea talks so much nonsense, and I can’t do anything about that! Most importantly, she’s right about this. There’s nothing I can say regarding how I used granduncle’s name.’
Austin had never clarified things because he wanted to mislead others, and this was something he was well aware of. Hence, there was nothing he could say when someone else exposed him this way.
After all, lies were lies. One lie could dictate a person’s integrity, and one would only look like a hypocrite, no matter what they said.
“Austin, you…” Thompson turned to look at him in shock. That was something he had never expected.
“You’re right. I’m not the miracle doctor’s secret apprentice, and I never said I was either. It’s just that everyone thinks I am, but I never denied it. I’ve never admitted it either!” Austin tried to defend himself. “Still, I wouldn’t be interested in the dirty things you do!”
With that, he walked forward, wanting to leave.
