“You knew Lily was sensitive and knew a lot about drugs, yet you tried to spike her tea. Did you do it to tip her off so that she’d switch her tea with yours? Did you let her go on purpose?” He slowly walked a few steps forward, then climbed up the stool.
Standing on top of it, he stared into Mike’s eyes judgingly.
“I thought she wouldn’t discover my drug and that she would overlook it. I hadn’t thought it through.” Mike regarded him calmly, showing no sign of alarm.
His boss stared at Mike for what seemed like an eternity through the mask, and then he started laughing. “Why? Aren’t you going to open the box and see what’s inside? It’s for you alone!”
Mike was filled with dread after hearing those words. He held up the box and opened it abruptly, finding a small, severed finger inside. The blood on it had dried up, and he could tell from its shape and size that it did not belong to an adult.
An explosion occurred in his head, as if a bomb had been thrown at it.
The next second, Mike grabbed the man’s collar and held him up. “You promised me you wouldn’t touch him!”
He roared with bloodshot eyes, wanting to tear the man into pieces.
Although the man knew that Mike was furious and could smash him to the floor, he was undaunted and let out an arrogant laugh instead.
“Mike, you’re afraid now, aren’t you? I warned you not to torment me with your tricks! Every time you try to be a smartass, your son will pay the price!” he laughed.
“How dare you harm my son! I’ll kill you!” Mike lifted him higher, and his gaze turned savage.
The man slowly approached, unable to catch his breath, and said, “Look carefully again. Does it belong to your son?”
Taken aback, Mike looked at the box. The finger was small and did not belong to an adult. However, after studying it carefully, he could tell it did not belong to Nick either.
His son’s finger was thinner, and his complexion was not as fair. Knowing that it was not his son’s finger, he let out a sigh of relief, then loosened his grip on the man’s collar and slowly put him down.
“Mike, this is just a minor warning!” Flopping onto the chair, the man smoothed out his clothes and said coldly, “I’m warning you for the last time. Do your job well. I don’t want to see you up to your tricks again! If not, I guarantee it’ll be your son’s finger next time!”
“You…” There was fear in Mike’s eyes as he looked up abruptly. He did not fear death or loss of fortune, but was most afraid that his son would be in any danger.
‘I haven’t given my son enough care and haven’t spent enough time with him over the years, yet I let him face such a danger. If I could, I'd be willing to die for him!’
“Yes… I understand!” His voice slowly became grim, and the glow in his eyes faded bit by bit.
