Dominic was surprised that Galen was so well-behaved and took a second to respond. Then he burst out laughing. This time, tears formed in his eyes.
“Uncle Dom, why are you out of bed?” Austin asked as he looked over his shoulder midway through his treatment. “Get some rest first. I’ll check your wrist pulse when I finish here.”
“I’m fine! I’ll just observe, okay?” Dominic said kindly, shaking his head.
Austin was surprised and nodded. Then he concentrated on his treatment.
Although the servants had been ill for quite some time, their symptoms were not severe, and only the sickest ones occasionally threw up blood. Since they had proper provisions, the virus did not take a heavy toll on their lives.
That morning, Austin told them he would perform acupuncture on them based on an ancient medical text. However, the servants had to wait for their turns patiently.
They lined up as Austin told them, and Galen even came to lend a helping hand. Everything went smoothly, and the estate seemed lively again.
Meanwhile, Dominic sat on a chair, wanting to hold Galen in his arms, but the little one struggled free and climbed off the older man. “Grandpa, sit here!”
Galen patted Dominic’s arm soothingly, then ran back toward the basin to continue wringing the towels.
Dominic looked at the two busying themselves for a while. He could no longer take it and went to help. Austin saw him coming over and hastily said, “Y-You don’t have to help, okay? I can handle it.”
“This is my estate. How can I let you do everything alone? Besides, I’m not dead, okay?” Dominic sounded feisty, but Austin laughed.
The trio felt famished after the last person received his acupuncture treatment hours later. Austin was unable to lift his arms. He had never been so tired since he started working as a physician.
He only served the wealthy and noble families in the past and never spent too much time on them. In addition, Austin made big bucks treating the wealthy. Although he had worked for free this time, he was happy.
He experienced the true joy of treating people for the first time and realized what medicine was truly about. Seeing those suffering from the virus and getting well, he felt a sense of fulfillment and achievement that neither money nor accolades could provide.
Although Dominic knew Austin meant well, the former could not help but tease him, “You just couldn’t wait to show off, could you?”
Austin was not upset and chuckled instead. “Yes, I was showing off! Now that I finally found a way to treat it, I just had to!”
The two shared a look and burst into laughter. Soon after, Galen joined them, even though he did not know why they were laughing.
“Come on, let’s eat. I’m starving!” Dominic scooped the boy up and walked toward the house.
