While he said it, he took her hand to slap his face.
Eloise yanked her hand off with a frown. “Do you think we’re still kids? Joseph Tanner, let me be frank with you. I’m indeed upset about your mistress and son because no woman on earth is willing to share their husband with someone else. Being someone who’s been around, I’m able to see the big picture and know what should take precedence. Do you think I’d do anything that could damage the company's interest out of jealousy?”
Thoroughly convinced, Joseph started to massage her shoulder as he said, “Yes, my dear wife, you’re right. I’m an idiot and an *sshole for suspecting you and Ari.
“However, Derrick and Stephanie are upset and refuse to give us what we need. What should we do? We can’t just force them, right? I tried to see Derrick, but Stephanie stopped me. I wonder if she’s trying to take control of the company.”
“Are you stupid?” Eloise looked at him. “After so many years, don’t you know what kind of a person she is? Is she up to the task even if she intends to do so? She’s not CEO material! If she’s holding back, she must be hoping to strike a bargain with us. To me, she’s easy to deal with.” She analyzed the situation from her own self-interest.
She knew about Arianna having gone to meet Derrick, but she had not expected that Stephanie, who was usually so gentle, would refuse to give Arianna the seal and even drive her away.
Even Joseph suffered a similar fate today. Eloise started to ponder, ‘With her husband seriously ill and her son likely dead, the woman must know there’s no use holding on to the company's control. Nobody would take her seriously even if she knew how to run a company. Stephanie must be holding on to the company as a bargaining chip to ensure she’d be taken care of for the rest of her life.’
“I think you’re right!” Nodding profusely, Joseph admitted that his wife was better than him at managing interpersonal relationships and understanding how people think. In these matters, Eloise was indeed better than Elizabeth.
“If so, would it be better if you go talk to her?” Joseph asked tentatively. “If we can get the seal, the passcode to the company’s safe, and the keys, then the Tanner Corporation will truly be ours!”
“Ours?” Throwing him a sidelong glance, Eloise chuckled. “Will it be ours or your precious son’s?”
“There you go again!”
Since she had said what was on his mind, Joseph let out a dry laugh in embarrassment. “Don’t worry. No matter what, I won’t mistreat you and Ari.”
In other words, he still planned to hand the company over to his precious son. Having been with him for so many years, Eloise knew how he was, and there was no way to change his deeply rooted prejudice.
“Save it until we gain control of the company, and don’t get ahead of yourself!”
“Yes, yes, my dear wife is right!” He smiled ingratiatingly, no longer upset as before.
