“He’s in control, my a*s!” Joseph snorted. “Tanner Corporation has been around for years. There’s no way that every employee would take him seriously, especially the old-timers. Once I give my orders at the right time, I can still take the company back!”
Elizabeth brightened hearing this, but she did not feel convinced after giving it some thought. “Are you sure? You’ve failed to seize Tanner Corporation after so many years, so how can you get it back now it’s in that man’s hands?”
“It’s different now. My brother was still around back then.”
“But your brother isn’t now?”
“He’s gone missing, probably kidnapped by Nathaniel. Yes, we have to report this to the police!” He grew convinced that his plan could work. “Damian, get ready to go to the police station. Wait, no, we should think through what we’ll say before we leave.”
Elizabeth noticed Joseph’s manic expression and asked, slightly worried, “Are you all right?”
“I’m fine! I just got an idea. Damian, you tell the cops that you got kidnapped and did not report it at first because he threatened you. After that, you tell them that your uncle and his family have also gone missing, probably kidnapped by Nathaniel.
“Oh, yes, blame Benedict’s death on Nathaniel too. That would nail him!” He laughed maniacally, feeling as if he had already succeeded.
“We have no proof. Will the cops believe me?” After going through a lot, Damian grew timid and figured it would not go as smoothly as his father thought.
“Once you’ve made the report, the cops have to investigate the case. Besides, you’re the victim, and they would surely conduct the investigation based on your statement. At the very least, that could keep him busy and buy us some time to do something.” Joseph rubbed his hands in excitement.
“Then won’t the cops keep Damian in the station again? Is it tough to make a witness statement? He suffered a lot at the station last time, so don’t ask him to do it again!” Elizabeth did not like the idea and wrapped her son protectively with her arms.
Joseph considered what she said and responded, “No, he’s only going to make a police report and record his statement. He’s not going there as a suspect. Okay, I’ll get the lawyer to keep you guys company.”
Elizabeth nodded after hearing that a lawyer would accompany Damian. “Okay, I guess it’s better if the lawyer is present.”
Damian gave no response while his parents discussed. Joseph frowned and looked down at him. “Damian, do you have a different opinion?”
Damain let out a wry grin. “I don’t, but Dad…” He got up and moved to the window, where he pointed downstairs. “Do you think we can make it to the police station?”
Joseph looked in the direction he pointed. At first glance, there was nothing unusual besides the passing crowd downstairs, but when he looked carefully, he saw the shady spots under the trees and the cars parked by the street.
He was gripped with alarm remembering Nathaniel’s warning.
He did not sense anything unusual when he came and thought the man was only trying to scare him. However, now that Damian had reminded him, Joseph thought it was unlikely that a careful person like Nathaniel would let them go to the police so easily.
“I’ll think of a way…” Joseph lit a cigarette and sat down with a frown.
