Briana was whining even though she knew perfectly well that Marcus would always be Cornelia's first thought, no matter what. "Cornelia, you're playing favorites. We all made this together, why does my brother get the first taste?"
Cornelia laughed and replied, "Well, because President Hartley is my boss. He's always my top priority; everyone else needs to step aside a bit."
Out of the blue, Briana asked, "So between my brother and Jeremy, who's number one in your heart?"
"How can you make such a comparison?" Cornelia was clear about separating her work and personal life. Her straightforward nature allowed her to express her thoughts directly, "Jeremy is my husband, my personal person. I'll be spending decades with him, if all goes well. In everyday life, I might think of Jeremy first, or maybe my grandma, or my two good friends Zack and Abigail. As for President Hartley, he's my boss. The one who pays me, and the person I respect the most. If it's job-related, he's definitely the first person I think of."
"Cornelia, so does that mean you never think of my brother in your daily life?" Briana felt that her answer was both appropriate and diplomatic.
Cornelia cut a piece of bread for Briana, hoping to shut her up with food, "Bri, have a bite."
Cornelia personally thought the bread was pretty good, but she felt like something was missing.
Then she remembered, it was mustard, "President Hartley, Bri, back in Rosenberg we like to dip our bread in mustard. Would you like to try some?"
Briana shook her head vigorously at the mention, "Cornelia, I can barely handle mustard, and my brother never eats mustard. Just mix your own dip, don't worry about us."
Then Marcus' reply slapped Briana in the face, "Well, I've heard of this way of eating, people from your place love it. My wife also comes from Rosenberg, so I should give it a try."
Briana was speechless. Her brother was really crossing lines now. He never used to eat mustard.
Cornelia quickly took out three dip plates and squeezed some mustard into them. She then asked Marcus, "Mr. Hartley, did your wife teach you this way of eating?"
Marcus nodded in response, "Yes."
Cornelia handed the dip to him, and then said, "Mr. Hartley, not everyone can handle this way of eating, you should try it first. If you can't stand it, don't force yourself. Personally, I think the most important thing for you is to have your wife in your heart. Everything else is secondary."
Marcus took a bite, and this unique flavor stimulated his taste buds.
The smell of the bread and mustard together made his stomach ache. But he persisted, eating one piece after another, nodding his head as he ate, indicating that he indeed found it delicious.
