Granny Rebecca said, "What can I do? I just want to hold your baby. Just pop one out and we'll help you take care of them. If you don't trust us two old ladies to babysit your kid, we'll hire a professional nanny. No worries, we won't let your job suffer."
Cornelia patiently explained, "Granny, it's not that I don't want to have kids, it's just that I really can't right now. Having a baby can seriously impact a woman's career.
"Sure, my company offers great benefits, but my job is special. I need to travel with my boss frequently. If I had a kid, I definitely couldn't handle the high-intensity workload I have now. I worked really hard for this job, and I don't want to just give it up."
Granny Rebecca understood Cornelia's concerns, but she believed that Cornelia's life should take precedence over work. "Nelly..."
Cornelia cut her off, "But Granny, don't worry, I'll definitely have a baby in the next few years."
"A baby?" Granny Luisa, who just walked to the kitchen door, got excited when she heard the news, "Nelly, are you pregnant? Does Jeremy know?"
"Put down your work, stop working, and rest immediately." Granny Luisa said excitedly, not giving Cornelia and Jeremy a chance to speak. "Great, I've been waiting for years to hold your baby."
"Granny, I..." Cornelia felt embarrassed because she and Jeremy hadn't done the deed yet, so there's no way she could be pregnant.
Granny Rebecca cleared her throat to help Cornelia out, "Don't get too excited, Nelly isn't pregnant yet. I was just encouraging her to have a baby sooner."
"Not pregnant?" Granny Luisa wasn't eager to accept it, hoping for a positive answer from Cornelia.
"Granny, I'm not pregnant." Cornelia didn't want to disappoint Granny Luisa, but she really wasn't pregnant, and lying would only make Granny Luisa more upset later.
Granny Luisa: "That's okay, you guys are still young. Nowadays, young people tend to have kids later. If you guys want to enjoy a few more years of couplehood before having a kid, we can understand." Even though Granny Luisa said it was okay, her eyes lost their sparkle.
The two grannies knew that young people nowadays tend to have kids later, and even more and more are choosing not to have kids. Although they knew this, they didn't agree with it. They, the older generation, had conservative views, believing that you should have kids once you're married.
Seeing the two grannies trying to smile, Cornelia felt really bad and suddenly felt a lot of pressure. She understood their feelings, but she also had her own life plans. She wanted to work for a few more years, and after accumulating some financial stability, then consider having a baby.
Of course, this was just her thoughts, she didn't know what Jeremy thought.
Because of the baby issue, Cornelia didn't eat much for dinner. After dinner, the two old ladies went to bed early. She had nothing to do, so she took out her phone and texted Jeremy, but still didn't get a reply from him.
She tried calling him, but all she got was the cold robotic voice, "The number you've dialed is switched off, please try again later."
