Marcus didn't expect Cornelia to bring up Jeremy out of the blue. He felt a bit jumpy, "Why are you suddenly mentioning him?"
Cornelia cracked a smile, "Just want to know more about him, that's all."
Her smile was forced, and Marcus noticed but didn’t think much of it, "I’ve told you, Jeremy and I are tight. If you need to reach him but don't feel comfortable doing so, you can tell me about it."
Cornelia asked, "Jeremy comes from a run-of-the-mill family, not exactly a household name in Riverton. How did you two meet?"
Marcus calmly explained, "My grandma and his grandma were friends. They often took us out together. So, we've known each other since we were kids."
"I see..." Cornelia responded softly, then asked, "What about your wife? When you are hospitalized, has she came to see you?"
Marcus replied, "She didn't know I was sick initially, but she came as soon as she found out."
Cornelia was a bit unsure. Was he talking about her?
She averted her gaze to look out the window. The outside was pitch-dark, just like her mood. She couldn't see anything, and didn't know which way was out.
Before she visited Marcus, many pieces of evidence and coincidences had already hinted at Marcus and Jeremy being the same person. But she didn’t want to believe it. She wanted to hear from Marcus himself that he wasn't Jeremy. So, she came to see him, holding on to that glimmer of hope.
However, once she was here, she didn't have the courage to confront him directly. How ridiculous!
"Cornelia, what's up with you?" Marcus noticed something was off about Cornelia today.
Cornelia turned back to him, "There are some things I can't wrap my head around. President Hartley, can you help clear them up?"
Marcus said, "Shoot."
