Lost in Mr. Preston's Temptation novel Chapter 15

Clara’s only response the spiteful words of the people around her was to purse her lips and go to the reception table to get a glass of champagne.

She knew that everything about the hotel incident had been planned by Steve. He was also behind the speed of the scandal spreading on the internet, adding fuel to the fire, and fanning the flames behind the scenes.

She estimated that everyone in J city now knew about her glorious deeds.

However, she was only one person. No matter how hard she tried to explain, those people wouldn’t believe her. It would be better to just pretend that she didn’t hear them.

Clara took a few sips of champagne as she looked around the venue. The dinner party was very grand, with almost all the business elite of J city in attendance.

She was glad that that man needed her. It meant that she was still of use, and also gave her an opportunity to negotiate with him.

She just didn’t know what Mr. Preston wanted her to do.......

Clara trying to be invisible, had stood in the corner as soon as she had entered, but there were always men coming up to her, ogling her with unrestrained eyes. Some men even said they would pay to have her.

Consequently, the gazes of the women around her grew even more hateful.

One of the ladies unable to stand it anymore, picked up a glass of red wine and splashed it on Clara’s face, “You are really disgusting, quickly get out!”

The cold red wine splashed into Clara’s eyes forcing her to close them.

Ever since she was a child, she had been the eldest daughter of the Rowan family. She had been spoiled and flattered. This was the first time that someone had splashed red wine on her at a banquet.

Now she had no family background and was no longer a young lady. She also no longer had anyone to protect her...

Clara just looked at the lady and didn’t argue with her. She turned around to get a napkin from the table, but inadvertently saw Steve Lane and Ruby Leke coming in her direction.

Steve was wearing a black tuxedo and standing tall and straight. He had a polite smile on his face and looked like a refined rascal.

“Mrs. Sandon.” Ruby often went in and out of various dinner parties and quickly recognized Mrs. Sandon. “The pearl earrings you’re wearing are so beautiful.”

Seeing that Mrs. Sandon didn’t look well, Ruby followed up with, “What’s the matter?”

“It’s all because I encountered an unlucky person” Mrs. Sandon glanced at Clara who she had just now splashed with red wine, “She’s a humiliation to the Rowan family. I don’t know how she got in here!”

Ruby followed her line of sight and saw a woman with wet hair. It was Clara Rowan!

The thought of being wildly slapped by Clara in the mall caused her face to ache and she stared at her with hidden resentment.

Looking more closely at Clara, she saw that the dress she was wearing was both rare and expensive.

After her bout of jealousy, Ruby stepped forward and looked measuringly at Clara. “If I am not mistaken, this dress is HMS’s runway model. Even celebrities can’t buy it, how did you manage?”

After a pause, she deliberately raised her voice, “Even if your chauffeur boyfriend drives others around in a luxury car, he can’t afford to buy this dress for you, right?”

As soon as Ruby said this, the surrounding women looked at Clara with even more disdainfully.

Mrs. Sandon ridiculed her, “She probably cheated it out of another man! She seemed to have put a lot of effort into coming to the dinner party.”

“Mr. Rowan must be really embarrassed by his daughter!”

“Ah, my heart hurts for Mr. Lane. I thought that he had married a good wife. I didn’t expect her to be such a person!”

Clara didn’t care about what they said. She just wiped her face and clothes with a tissue. When she was about to go, a tall man stopped her.

Steve asked lightly, “This is an exclusive dinner party. How did you get in?”

“It doesn’t concern you.” Clara’s tone was a little cold.

Her sorry figure was reflected in Steve’s eyes. Her wet hair rested on her pale shoulders, making her look weak, and not as assertive and dazzling as before.

Although happy, Steve also felt a few other more subtle emotions.

Clara felt that her wrist was going to break, and she glared at the man and said hatefully, “Steve, this is a dinner party, and we have no relationship with each other. Do you want to do something to me?”
