That same night, Matthew wasted no time returning to the Seraphis Alliance, where he found the crown prince slumped over a mountain of court documents, unconscious from sheer exhaustion. Even for someone like Matthew, the sight of all these papers was overwhelming—how had the prince ended up with so much after completing the main tasks of the Martial League?
Matthew sighed, shaking his head as he lifted the barely conscious prince onto a nearby recliner.
"Such a good kid," he thought, "but this paperwork has him nearly foaming at the mouth."
Leaving the prince to rest, Matthew made his way to Stellan’s office, where the lights were still on. Stellan, buried in a larger stack of court documents than the prince, didn’t even look up when Matthew entered.
"Just set the documents over there," Stellan muttered, not realizing who had come in.
Matthew couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for his old friend. Working this hard at five in the morning? Stellan definitely deserved a raise next year.
When Stellan finally looked up and saw Matthew, he let out an exasperated sigh. "Oh, it's you, Summit Warden! Off sightseeing while I’ve been buried in paperwork!"
It had been a tough time for Stellan. Despite hiring a team of assistants, the workload seemed endless. The city of Hulwin was expanding at an insane rate—what was an empty lot one day would be under construction the next.
Matthew chuckled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. He had promised to help with Hulwin’s reforms but had ended up running off on other errands.
Stellan, however, softened a little. "Still, despite the exhaustion, everything is moving in the right direction."
A small, proud smile crept across his face. The frustration of being sidelined by the Yarwood Family still lingered, but now Stellan’s people were making real progress. A new wave of trained personnel would soon take over, sparing Stellan from future late-night marathons of paperwork.
"So, where are you headed next?" Stellan asked, sensing that Matthew was already thinking ahead.
With Hulwin stable, Matthew was ready to move on, eager to develop Seraphis further. He’d have to visit more cities, now that the Yarwood Family’s influence had been dealt with. He scanned the map on Stellan's office wall, searching for the next city to focus on.
His eyes settled on a particular spot—Dewsbury, Skargness. Its location between Hulwin and the mountain city made it a strategic choice. Establishing strong connections with Dewsbury's chamber of commerce could pave the way for tighter cooperation between Hulwin, Concordia, and Dewsbury. That kind of unity would encourage rapid growth across all three cities.
Stellan followed Matthew's gaze.
"I knew you'd choose Dewsbury. In the long run, it'll prove to be even better than Hulwin," he said, pulling out a document and handing it to Matthew.
"The Mirren Family runs things in Dewsbury. If you can get them on your side, everything will fall into place. After how you handled the Yarwood Family and reformed Hulwin, they’ll likely be open to working with you. When you propose cooperation, they’ll agree—at least on the surface." Stellan had clearly thought this through and laid out the situation plainly.
Matthew nodded thoughtfully. "I get it."
