In the parlor of the Mirren Estate, Glaucus sat in the grand armchair at the head of the room. On both sides of him were the heads of various families, all of whom secretly opposed Matthew.
Calbhach downed his glass of whiskey in one gulp and stood up, addressing Glaucus. "Mr. Glaucus, you didn't call us here today just to drink whiskey, did you?"
Glaucus' face remained unreadable as he quietly said, "Patience."
An elderly man sitting across from Calbhach smiled warmly and said, "Don't be so hasty, Mr. Watson. I'm sure Mr. Mirren wouldn't summon us without a good reason."
A faint smile crossed Glaucus' face as he nodded at the old man. What irked him the most was being referred to as the "vice head" of the family. Pontus had been in seclusion for over 30 years, yet those old fools still wouldn't acknowledge him as the new head of the house.
"Mr. Mirren, there's news," a servant said as he quickly entered the room and whispered in Glaucus' ear. For the first time, Glaucus' expression slightly shifted as he waved the servant away.
"According to our latest intel, Matthew is planning to buy an abandoned neighborhood about 500 yards from the Martial League. I don't know what exactly he intends to do with it, but I doubt it's for anything good," Glaucus said, his voice causing a heavier atmosphere to settle over the room.
After a long silence, one of the heads spoke up. "Mr. Mirren, what's your take on this?"
"If you ask me, we should just hire some people to stir up trouble there. Throw some garbage, smear the place, and make it a mess. Even if he hires people to renovate, we can pay them to sabotage the project. If Matthew offers them ten grand, we'll offer twenty, outbid him at every turn," Calbhach interrupted, standing up and rubbing his bald head as he spoke loudly.
The other family heads sat in silence, their faces betraying what they were thinking. They couldn't believe how the Watson Family had survived this long with Calbhach's almost nonexistent emotional intelligence.
Glaucus' eyes flashed with anger, but he managed to hold it in as he responded, "Matthew Larson is the Summit Warden of the Martial League. He can easily use his authority to station guards around the neighborhood, and if you think money alone will work, do you really believe the business associations in Concordia and Hulwin are sitting idle?"
