Before it popped open, there was no trace of any secret compartment—no seams, no signs at all.
Helen reached into the hidden compartment and searched around for a moment. Finally, she pulled out a brown envelope with a small line of text on the front that read 'Seraphis Supply Chain,' and beneath that line were two large red characters, 'Top Secret!'
Hesitation flickered in Helen's eyes. She thought about Miller and Tritus waiting outside. Neither of them seemed like bad people; in fact, they were both polite and respectful. Plus, they had invested in S&L's Breakfast, so they could be considered allies. Surely, letting them see the Seraphis supply route map shouldn't be too big of a risk. What she didn't realize, though, was that the other three people in the house, every single one of them, harbored ill will toward Matthew or his family.
Holding the brown envelope, Helen returned to the living room and placed it on the table. Miller and Tritus could barely contain their greed as they looked at it.
Just as they were about to grab the envelope, Helen's hand suddenly pressed down on it. Her gaze fixed on them, and she spoke in a low voice. "Mr. Tritus, Miller, you are both important partners of S&L's Breakfast. That's the only reason I'm showing you this document, but I need your absolute discretion. Not even James can know a single word of this, and I won't be saying more either."
Her words made Miller and Tritus exchange a glance. This was a dream come true! They had wanted to undermine Matthew, but until now, they had only worked in the shadows. They wouldn't dare confront him openly.
Now, Matthew was not only the president of the Martial League across two provinces, head of the Summit Wardens, but also the holy doctor of Cathay. Just these titles alone made it impossible for them, or even their families, to act against him directly. Otherwise, their families would be next in line to face the same fate as the Damron Family, who had been utterly humiliated by Matthew.
Both men nodded earnestly, even swearing oaths. "Rest assured, if a single word of this leaves our mouths, may we be struck by lightning and condemned by both man and god!"
Their solemn oath brought a smile to Helen's face, and only then did she hand them the document.
As Miller and Tritus opened the envelope, what they saw inside stunned them—a map of the sea routes connecting Montiria and Seraphis. The two young heirs exchanged another glance, their eyes wide with shock. Matthew's supply chain wasn't even in Seraphis—or anywhere within Cathay, for that matter.
Both Miller and Tritus, along with everyone else, had always been curious about the source of S&L's Breakfast's supplies from Seraphis. Most assumed that Matthew had used his position and influence to secure a special supply route through the Martial League. But now, before Helen could even explain, the two of them had already pieced it together.
Everyone had been wrong. Matthew's source and supply route weren't within Cathay or Seraphis at all. He had been importing everything via Montiria's sea routes…
And that realization was what exactly frightened them. Under normal circumstances, no one would have been able to achieve this. The sea routes near Montiria were strictly off-limits, with any unauthorized ships being fired upon and destroyed if they didn't heed warnings to turn back.
But then, they quickly remembered Matthew's exceptional status in Montiria. After Gadel became king, Matt was appointed as the Prime Regent, and with Gadel's disappearance and the princess consort uninterested in ruling, the entire country was now under the control of Mortimer Zedler, the grandmaster of Southaven.
