The man in the linen vest charged up to a building, ignoring the "Knock Before Entering" sign, and shoved the door open, revealing the scene inside.
A burly man sat at a desk, massaging his temples as he flipped through a stack of documents. Seeing the door fly open, he roared, "What did I say about knocking before coming in?"
However, the man in the doorway had no time for apologies. He yelled, "Chief, I just saw Boone!"
"What?!" The chief, who'd been seated, instantly rose to his feet.
Now standing, his towering figure was even more imposing, his muscular body covered in scars and bullet marks. At nearly six and a half feet tall, he looked like a grizzly bear.
"Boone's at the dock… and he doesn't look so good."
The words had barely left his mouth when the chief barreled past him, shoving him aside as he stormed out of the office, muttering under his breath but unable to mask the happiness in his tone. "D*mn that son of a b*tch! I tried keeping him as an accountant, and he goes and skips town on me!"
As they neared the dock, Boone Laramie's face grew more anxious. Suddenly, he fell to his knees before the young man, pleading, "Mr. Kaiser, please, my family member is in urgent need of medical help. If I can't get them to a hospital, they'll die. You've withheld my pay for a month now. We agreed on daily payments."
Boone's words made Emil Kaiser's face contort with rage. "How dare you, a worthless laborer, question me?!"
Too angry to hold back, Emil swung his foot toward Boone. In his eyes, this lowly laborer had no right to question him. If the kick landed, Boone would likely end up bedridden, if not worse.
Just as Emil's foot was about to strike, he cried out in pain, collapsing to the ground. A red mark appeared on his leg, and a small stone fell to the ground in front of him.
Boone, still on his knees, stared in disbelief at Emil lying on the ground.
Matthew, dressed in spotless white, approached from the dock, his clean, crisp clothes contrasting sharply with the grimy, sinister atmosphere of the island.
Sprawled on the ground, Emil snarled up at Matthew. "You b*stard! How dare you attack me?! Don't you know who I am? My uncle's a squad captain at the Island Watch—you're dead meat! I'll make sure you don't last the night! I'll have you thrown in a brothel, then sell your organs and hang your skin up like a flagpole!"
"Annoying." Matthew's eyes narrowed in irritation. "Leave or die." His voice was cold, and a surge of malice radiated from him.
Emil's tirade halted instantly. Overwhelmed by Matthew's malice, his eyes rolled back, foam gathered at his mouth, and a foul odor began to spread—he'd wet himself in fear.
"Uncle, are you alright?" A young woman in a light blue dress ran over, her face filled with worry, as she helped Boone to his feet.
"Winnie, why did you come out? Don't you know how dangerous it is?" Boone gently scolded his niece, concern etched across his face.
"But just now…"
