Matthew was momentarily speechless. How did I become the hero in her story so fast? he wondered.
"Let's not get into heavy topics, Miss Ashcroft," he suggested, trying to steer the conversation elsewhere.
Allyson nodded. Her expression softened as she thought, It's a shame someone decent like him was forced out of his own country by those corrupt officials.
Matthew led her to a small cabin near the dock. Mack and others had built it during busier times to offer workers a spot to rest. Inside stood just a table and a few chairs—the bare essentials.
He stated apologetically, "Sorry it's not more comfortable, Miss Ashcroft. Feel free to sit down, and I'll have someone bring in a couch if you'd like."
As he spoke, his gaze wandered to the wall, where he spotted some odd items—jump ropes, sandbags, and even dumbbells. Seriously? This place is practically a mini-gym. Most cabins have snacks and cards, but these guys took fitness to a whole new level, he thought, amused.
"Oh, don't worry—it's fine!" Allyson assured him, comparing it to the rougher hideouts she was used to. This place was practically cozy by comparison.
"Well, rest up," Matthew urged as he stepped outside to check on the crew. He thought, Honestly, these guys act like they're living out some high school drama. Are their brains all muscle?
As he was about to leave, Allyson asked, "Matteo, have you thought about your next steps?"
Matthew looked back, a bit puzzled. "Not really... Why do you ask?"
Allyson's eyes lit up with a new idea. "I can help you be the governor of this island, Matteo."
Allyson understood that she couldn't pursue the governorship independently—not at this moment. Even the Island Watch official who'd been there when her dad passed had held significant influence. Therefore, she decided to support Matthew's bid for governor, hoping her status as the daughter of the former governor would boost his credibility.
Maybe, with that connection, I can... Allyson's gaze drifted to Matthew, her thoughts briefly wandering before she shook them off. No, I shouldn't be thinking like that.
Usually, she was strong-willed and focused, but something about Matthew drifted her mind more than usual.
She fully expected him to agree. Yet, to her surprise, Matthew shook his head. "Thanks, Miss Ashcroft, but I'm not interested in being governor."
He truly was indifferent to the title—especially not on an island this tiny, barely comparable to Eastcliff.
"You realize how much power the governor has, right?" Allyson stared at Matthew, bewildered, unable to grasp why he would turn down such an opportunity.
Matthew just shrugged. "Just not my thing. If you want to go for it, we'd be more than happy to support you. As friends of the Veiled Assembly, we'd back you up."
However, Allyson's words gave him an idea. The island might be small, but its position on the edge of the West Montiria Islands makes it naturally defensible. If I help her become the governor, we can turn this place around—strengthen its defenses, grow its economy, and build a solid new base.
