Rosa immediately turned around and approached Stephen. She threw herself into his arms.
"Stephen, marry me! Let's get the marriage certificate first thing tomorrow, okay? I want to have a home in Jipsburg."
At that moment, she truly longed for someone to rely on. She wanted to get married and have her own home.
She couldn't wrap her head around how Joe could so easily marry Skylar. If it weren't for Skylar, she and Joe would have been husband and wife by now.
They could have been raising children and living a joyful life. Everyone around them would have envied what they had.
Stephen stiffened at her words. The smile on his face almost faltered. "Marry you?"
"Yes, marry me! You always said you loved me and would take care of me for the rest of your life, right? I believe in you. Stephen, right now, you're the only one I can trust. The only one." Rosa held onto him tightly, afraid that he might leave her.
She wasn't sure if it was just her imagination, but it felt like Stephen hadn't been as attentive toward her lately.
Stephen couldn't help but roll his eyes inwardly. He found her suggestion preposterous. Did she think that he was some kind of last resort?
She thought she could turn to him when no one else wanted her. However, he maintained a calm tone and said, "I do love you, but I never expected you'd ask me to marry you under these circumstances. I know you still have feelings for that man. You only feel heartbroken because he's married now, which is why you're making this decision.
"I can't agree to this. I'm very clear that if we get married, you'll regret it. I'd rather stay by your side now and help you get through this painful time."
Rosa couldn't stop the tears from falling as she listened, not thinking too deeply about Stephen's words.
"What if… What if I had fallen in love with you? What if I truly wanted to marry you?" she asked.
She desperately longed to find someone who would genuinely care for her and prioritize her. She wanted to be in a place where she was irreplaceable—just like how Joe cared for Skylar. To him, other women were nothing more than afterthoughts. No, other women didn't even exist in his world.
