Dory walked into the shopping mall with the twenty dollars in her hand.
She went straight to the stationary section.
This was her first time inside the stationary shop. There were so many different stationary supplies around, she felt dizzy just looking at them.
And every one of them had a different price tag.
Dory began comparing prices.
She had made a shopping list and decided on a budget.
She needed a school bag, a pencil box, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, etc.
She also wanted to save some of the money from her twenty dollars.
After doing some thorough calculating, she finally picked out all the items she needed and came to a total that was just under twenty dollars.
Dory was extremely proud of herself.
Just as she walked up to the counter to pay, another little girl skipped over while holding her mother's hand.
There were a lot of things inside the little girl's shopping basket.
When the little girl saw Dory, her eyes widened in surprise.
She was surprised to see Dory holding a shopping basket and it had stationary inside.
"Dory! You've come to do some shopping as well!"
The little girl's name was Dahlia. She and her grandmother were Dory's neighbors.
Every year, Dahlia would come and stay at her grandmother's place for a few months.
Because her parents lived in the city, Dahlia felt that she was superior to the other children in the suburbs.
Dory felt embarrassed.
Dory recognized that it was Dahlia.
"Yes. I'll be going to primary school very soon. My mommy gave me twenty dollars to buy my school supplies." Dory replied.
Dahlia looked at her suspiciously, "You're going to school?! Which one are you going to? What's it called?"
Dahlia didn't believe that Dory was going to school!
She didn't stay at her grandmother's place for very long, but even she knew that Dory was the poorest kid in the area!
Regardless of how poor any of the kids were, they all went to kindergarten.
