"No." Athena steadied her emotions, her voice as usual, "Maybe I didn't get enough sleep last night. Wait for me in the restaurant. I'll be there shortly."
"Alright, take your time, no rush," Byron's voice was incredibly gentle.
Yet, to Athena, it felt like a knife slowly cutting into her heart.
The call ended.
"Mike, you've been working hard these past few days. Go and rest." Athena paused for a moment. "Rest well, because there might not be much time for rest in the future."
"Understood." Mike nodded.
After hesitating for a moment, with so much he wanted to say, he only managed. "Ms. Stella, Stella Group and we will always be your strongest backers, no matter what happens or whatever decision you make."
Athena smiled at Mike and nodded.
Mike left shortly after.
Sitting in the car, Athena felt as if an invisible hand was tightly choking her neck.
After calming herself, she drove to the prearranged restaurant.
As soon as she parked the car, she spotted Martin.
Deep down, she still harbored a sliver of hope that perhaps the videos Mike found were linked to another side of Byron's personality.
Athena opened the car door. "Martin."
Martin turned his head, and Athena could see the displeasure on his face.
"What's wrong? Where's the child?" Athena glanced behind him.
"I couldn't pick him up. Mr. Crawford just called me and gave me an earful," Martin said with a stern face.
"How could you not have picked him up? Was the address wrong?" Athena asked gravely.
"I went according to the address Mr. Crawford provided. When I arrived and called the kid, the number Mr. Crawford gave me turned out to be invalid!" Martin furrowed his brows. "I'm sure I called the number Mr. Crawford sent me. Look..."
Martin showed Athena his chat logs with Byron.
She looked and without a word, dialed the number herself.
Disconnected.
It was midday, and the autumn weather felt a bit dry and hot.
However, Athena felt as if she had plunged into a freezing abyss, cold enough to make her teeth chatter.
"Mrs. Crawford, what's wrong?" Martin noticed Athena's pale face, taken aback. "Are you feeling unwell?"
"No..." Athena waved her hand dismissively and headed straight for the elevator.
Perhaps Byron had given the wrong number? Didn't Martin just say the child was coming on his own?
With these thoughts, Athena's pace quickened, so much so that the tall Martin had to jog to keep up.
She headed straight for the restaurant. Coincidentally, Byron was waiting by the elevator.
"Athena!" Seeing her, Byron hurriedly approached.
"Mr. Crawford..." Martin hung his head, resembling a child who had done something wrong.
Byron glanced at him, clearly a bit irritated.
